Upperclass Move In

Our sophomore son just received a strange email from the housing office, giving him instructions for "move in" day for new students - including a time slot for when he is supposed to move in to his room on August 17. As a continuing student, he is not planning to arrive on campus that early before classes begin. What gives? Are they confused, or what? Did any other continuing students receive such an email? He will be living in a program house on North Campus this year (sore subject), so is it possible they assume he is an incoming freshman or new student? (But they should have a record that he lived in Mews last year!) Does he need to follow up with an email to the housing office, or just show up when he feels like it? He stored his stuff with Big Red Storage over the summer, so they should be moving it in for him sometime.

is he living on campus this year? if so i’m not completely sure how it works, but maybe just call and ask about it? maybe it was just a computer error, or maybe west campus dorms also have move in time slots?

most upperclassmen move in early anyways just to let you know, though. o-week is the best week of the year, and gets better every time!

He doesn’t have to move in that day, but all the dorms open on the first day of O-Week.

If he’s living on west, he doesn’t have to come on move in day. If he’s RAing on north, he’s definitely obligated to be there for move in day, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I’m pretty sure these emails are automated, but if not, maybe they transposed one of the numbers in the email of an incoming freshmen and accidentally sent this email to him instead.

I got the letter, too, which was strange considering I’m a rising senior and I don’t recall receiving a similar email in the previous two summers. I suppose they’re changing up the system a little to prevent mass move-ins at the same time. -shrug- If it’s of any importance, this is my 3rd year on West and I’ll be living in the exact same room I lived in last year.

He is living in a program house on North Campus. We are driving up from Texas (a long drive!) and will arrive on the 19th. Since he left most of his stuff in storage over the summer, we won’t be moving in massive quantities of stuff – just a couple of suitcases and things acquired over the summer. He is not an RA or anything, just got stuck on North Campus again thanks to the housing lottery. So he doesn’t want to be there for the whole orientation period, but will be there a couple of days before classes begin.

I think that because so many upperclassman help with orientation, & they have no mechanism to know who, they just send the info to everyone who is living on campus.

Son just got an email from housing saying that upperclassmen should ignore yesterday’s email and are welcome to move in after the scheduled date/time for new students. So we are good to go with our original travel schedule!

Oh hey, I’m in Houston right now too, did your son by any chance go to Bellaire?

No. He graduated from St. John’s. We’ve met a number of Houstonians at Cornell, including kids from Bellaire, Lamar, Memorial, Kinkaid, Sugar Land, and elsewhere. Son had a dorm mate from League City.
