School president reflects on UR athletics

Ayers' goal: best small-university sports program in the country

UR Admissions:

Please tell PresidentAyres that if men's lacrosse is added then the complementary sport for women should be varsity rowing.

Our current sports need to be fully funded before we add additional sports.

otis, the club crew team is pretty active, having competed in London on the Thames and the Head of the Charles in the past few years.

Shecallsmedad--

I should have addressed just the first 3 paragraphs of that message just to you and the rest to the general audience. There have been quite a few comments on the boards that have expressed a lot of negative feelings about our financial aid program, so the rest of the message was really more broadly intended.

I'm so glad your family is happy with your daughter's decision to come to UR! The class is looking great and we're so happy to have earned your confidence. One thing I can promise is that if you ever have issues, at Richmond you will find a person to voice them to.

We are happy to welcome your family into the Richmond family!

UR Admissions

And on the sports issue, if men's lacrosse comes on as varsity, I've got good sources that tell me synchronized swimming will get at least a good look from the administration to be re-elevated back to varsity (it was bumped down to club maybe 8-9 years ago). We have a long and outstanding history in synchro at Richmond and have a solid amount of alumni support.

No jokes necessary!

Thanks URAdmissions.
It's been about five-six months of our lives (more specifically, my daughter's life) being "up in the air" about what college to apply to/attend etc.,etc.

It's pleasant to know that's behind us now and the right choice has been made.

D has worn her "University of Richmond Class of 2012" 2-3 times in the 5-6 days since she made her decision (she's washed it, of course <g>), so she's excited and at peace with the decision.</g>

The synchro team has finished in the top 10 in the nation several times over the past few years. Despite the historical success, I would be surprised with this choice as there are no conference championships and 10 of our conference mates have volleyball teams (and it's not a terribly expensive sport). I have no inside knowledge on this though, so I'll defer to you Admissions. (Exciting day huh?)

I know that President Ayers has met with the synchro coach and assured her that the team would get a close look should there be an opportunity to elevate a women's team to varsity. Whether or not it would come to pass is another matter of course. I do think that both volleyball and crew would also get close looks. I just happen to be partial to synchro!

UR Admiss ... I know you're the pro, and with every respect and appreciation for those vasolined, swim-suited nubile young women , please get real about that. Should UR establish a syncronized swimming team ... in advance of either women's volleyball or crew ... Ayres should be neutered. Only if they promise to buy their own V grease. Have you ever seen a 5 gallon drum of that stuff?

OK, now you've said it!

I was a 4 year, varsity synchronized swimmer back in the day when it was varsity. We were 2nd in the nation, thank you very much. I'd love to see you give synchro a try!

I too think the odds that synchro would get the nod are slim, but an alum can wish, right?

I don't know how to use all the silly emoticons or they would be liberally used in this message.

UR Admissions -- you state in post #44 -- One thing I can promise is that if you ever have issues, at Richmond you will find a person to voice them to.

As the father of an honor student that transferred out of UR in January, 2008, I agree that you certainly have an overabundance of administration to voice concerns to. What these administrators lack though, is the ability or the interest in resolving these issues. Particularly the Dean of Men.

UR Admissions

With all do respect to you and other synchronized swimming enthusiasts, the NCAA does not recognize synchronized swimming as a sport.

See Link for NCAA Sports:
NCAA Sports - NCAA.com

In that regards, otis, even rugby isn't an NCAA sport. D1 is playing club rugby at another school and loves it! D2 would love to play, when she goes on to college. It's a tremendous sport and can't believe it's not recognized.

I'll second the rugby comment. UR men's team has had some tremendous success regionally over the last few years making it just one step shy of the national championship tournament. The women's team is pretty new and given the demographics of girls at UR, I doubt they'll ever be regionally competitive, but they have a lot of fun and were a pretty interesting group while I was there.

momray:

I pointed out that synchronized swimming is not an NCAA sanctioned sport in reply to the suggestion that if Richmond addes men's varsity lacrosse team it may not be able to add womens synchronized swimming to offset funds and scholarships in the Title IX equations.

Apparantly rugby may also not be used as a Title IX offset.

My comment was not offered as a disrespect for either synchronized swimming oe rugby.

Below is a summary of stats for URichmond's Athletic Department which reflects that there were 231 male participants and 226 female participants, coaching salaries & revenues/ expenses: Institution List

no disrespect taken. I was of interest in the "sports" recognized by the NCAA.
