Urban coed safety schools on the east coast?

66% female o.o
NPC says I have to pay 10k a year.

I’ll be doing EA to Temple, Drexel, Northeastern (No essays)
UChicago, UVA and UMich.

This is pretty safe, I know the latter three will be hard it’s EA.

Might I suggest Alfred University? It’s in New York State, it’s private but is said to offer really good financial aid.

No, sorry, NPC says 12k-18k.
Would UVA and UMich be realistic to apply EA? One is out of state and the other one is far. (UChicago is further but I like it way more)

Like is UVA too expensive OOS? It seems not so much on the NPC.

See, my mom thinks if I’m applying to Temple and Drexel I will have no future.

Well with full pell and state grant you might have tuition at a PASHHE state school covered,
can you commute to one?
How does your Mom expect you to pay for these other schools?
<a href=“List of Colleges That Meet 100% of Financial Need”>http://www.thecollegesolution.com/list-of-colleges-that-meet-100-of-financial-need/</a>
Bucknell and Lehigh have engineering and are on the list of schools that meet 100% need.

Yea, Lehigh is on my list. I already look at that link but Bucknell is too far.

is this list more realistic?
Dartmouth College
Cornell University
Penn (ED)
University of Chicago (EA)
University of Virginia (EA)
Boston College
Lehigh University
Boston University
Boston College
George Washington University
Brandeis University
University of Michigan (EA)
Northeastern University (EA)
Temple University (EA)
Drexel University (EA)

I know, still a lot of reaches, but Early Action can be very helpful.

I still don’t know why Brandeis,BC and BU all cost 10k on the NPC, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t apply, right? I like Boston.

How about U Pitt? It’s urban and you would get In-State Tuiton.

Why would you think that living in Philly would help you get into Penn? I don’t think it would help at all… Penn is a private university in spite of the name. If anything they are looking for geographic diversity, and being a PA student won’t help you.

You indicated that you think NPCs are not accurate. Our experience is that they are pretty accurate, but they will often overstate your aid (so you would get less) if your parents are divorced, they own a small business, or own rental real estate.

Well I think being in the Philadelphia School District does help because that’s how people from my school get in ever year, their SATs were under 2000, only one of them got a 2080. They also took the Summer Academy though, which is another hook, and I attended that too. There is another Penn class that I applied for, it is during the Fall. I believe I have a chance.

Through NPC, UPitt doesn’t give any aid by the way…

Should I still consider BC, BU and Brandeis? Through NPC, I still have to pay like 10k.

Ah, like U of Chicago does for kids in certain areas of Chicago. Okay, makes sense. I hope it helps you out.

Yea, there’s a more than slight chance lol. So should I pick those 3 schools or any schools that say i have to pay 10k through their NPC? I like all three of those schools.

Do you feel comfortable self-funding $10,000 per year (assuming no family contribution), which is the outer limit of a reasonable expectation fo self-funding ($5,500 direct loan plus some work earnings)?

“Meet full need” schools do expect a student contribution (direct loans and/or work earnings).

Perhaps a student with such a family situation can run the NPCs with “normal” answers and “worst case” answers to get a range of NPC estimates for each school. The “worst case” answers would be:

Include all income and assets of divorced non-custodial parent, unless school explicitly states that such are not considered, or uses only FAFSA. If the non-custodial parent is expected to be uncooperative with financial aid forms, then assume that you will get no need-based financial aid from the school.

For small business, rental real estate, self-employment, or other income that is not typical wages/salaries or income from ordinary investments (e.g. interest on bank accounts), use gross income before any employment-related deductions that normally reduce reported income.

Yea I don’t feel comfortable with 10k, but what if I really want to go to that college? Like BU and BC? Also, my dad is in China and is unemployed so he cannot fill the noncustodial profile, is that a problem?

Why would he not be able to complete the non-custodial parent profile?

Well obviously he does not know English and has no income.

“Well obviously he does not know English and has no income.”

How was that obvious? People here were trying to help you. No need to be sarcastic. U Mich and UVA with your gpa are high reaches.

Okay I did not mean to be sarcastic, sorry.
I know they are both reaches but I want to apply EA just to see if I have a chance.
It’s not impossible…
My junior year GPA would be almost 4.0 UW, but unfortunately they don’t just count that.
