Urban College for Music, Creative Writing, Others

Hi everyone!

I'm in search of any school with a serious music program for an aspiring professional clarinetist, as well as a formidable creative writing program (even if it is a denomination of the English major). But I also want these schools to excel in many other fields, to accommodate someone else who is less sure about a major. An urban atmosphere is important to me!

Any ideas?

Thank you!

A serious music program for an aspiring professional instrumentalist would be a Bachelor of Music degree, and that would fill all your available coursework outside of your required core courses. Creative writing or another major would take a fifth and maybe sixth year. You can double major with a B.A. in Music or just take lessons from faculty, but serious aspiring musicians are getting B.Mus. degrees, many at music conservatories.

CHECK the Music Majors thread. This sort of double major is discussed frequently.

For strong doable 5 year double degree programs: Check out Peabody/Johns Hopkins - very strong in creative writing - & Northwestern.

If you’re willing to go smaller town - Michigan and Iowa (famous grad program in Creative Writing.)

And if you’re willing to go rural, Bard (great writing program) & Oberlin.
