Accepted student, East Asian Studies major, New Brunswick Campus: how urban is the campus compared to downtown campuses like George Washington in DC or Northeastern in Boston? I toured campus via Google Street View and it looks very green and suburban, but not urban / commercial / dynamic.

Washington DC and Boston are major east coast cities with many varied cultural and social activities. New Brunswick cannot be compared to those cities at all. While New Brunswick is an urban/commercial area, it is in no way as dynamic as DC and Boston. There are many things to do in New Brunswick and the train to NYC is right on the Rutgers Campus but it is considered a small city.

Thank you for the speedy comment! I’m the parent and my daughter is an admitted student at Rutgers. They have a great program for her major but she really wants a campus with access to an urban core (museums / restaurants / etc but mostly PEOPLE and ACTIVITY). Her brother is at Mary Washington - beautiful campus, great town, but sort of remote from her perspective. Are you a student at Rutgers?

The College Ave campus is adjacent to downtown New Brunswick, and there are some restaurants/bars and things to do, with easy NJ Transit access to NYC, but I wouldn’t consider it the same experience as going to school near NYC, Philadelphia, Washington, etc. It’s more of a suburban sprawl with a bit of (somewhat yucky) city in there. No one really strolls down the streets of New Brunswick like they would in NYC (that made me lol for some reason) My son currently attends and I graduated some time ago.
