Urban legend or not.....SAT difficulty varies with when taken?

I've read tales about the SAT's being more difficult in the spring & easier in the winter.....or is it the other way around??

What is your opinion here?

If you believe difficulty is variable, why do you think that is so?

All I know is son took SAT I 3 times; Nov 04, Dec 04 & Mar 05. His test results were comparable on all 3 tests. His ACT which he took sometime in 05 was also pretty comparable, as were his SAT IIs.

I doubt there's any intentional patterns in test difficulty. When one test is "easier" than another, I would guess that the curve makes up for it

Every test question that counts for your score has been used before, and collegeboard uses a statistical process (I think it's called "Equating" but I'm not sure) to ensure that you score as well as previous students with comperable results on the same questions. The process is not perfect, but generally it means that the same person will get about the same score no matter which test form they get. There are certainly no annual patterns in difficulty.
