Is Durham as boring as they say? I am looking for a college in an exciting city like New York, D.C., Boston, or even Austin or Providence. How far away from that is Durham?

[Durham, North Carolina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Durham, North Carolina - Wikipedia)

Seems to be pretty far from it…

Hm, Atlanta is a couple hours away

Atlanta is about 6 hrs away, not exactly a day trip

Right. And Washington DC is 4 hours away. So I don’t think there are any major cities (by northern standards) around here. Charlotte, which is 2.3 hrs away, is a bit more urban, but I’ve never been there, so I can’t tell you much about it.

If you are a big city person, sorry Duke is not really for you. Duke is actually one of the smallest colleges for its prestige, HYPMS are all bigger by a lot

Actually, the HYPMS are all about the same size as Duke with the exception of Penn when you look at the undergrad population. In fact, a few are even smaller than Duke. The most significant difference is in the size of the grad population which doesn’t really impact the lives of undergrads except when it comes to the stength of research being conducted (though any of the HYPMS and Duke are considered strong research universities).

If you were referring to the physical size, then I’d have to say you couldn’t be further from the mark. Duke actually has one of the largest campuses in the country. Stanford might have a larger continuous area, but Duke has larger overall land holdings.

Of course your only comparing to Stanford, but Stanford is very close to big cities in Cali, San Francisco where there is many things to do.
Duke however, is actually far away from big well known cities. It is quite a distance away from Charlotte
Harvard and MIT are like right outside of Boston, if you like to party, it is a good place
Columbia is obviously in NYC, well that’s self descriptive
Yale well its not really close to many “party cities” but New Haven is not bad, and Hartford isn’t eather
Princeton idk about that
but really Duke would not be a super duper place if you like to hang out in large city, Columbia is

Of course I’m only comparing Stanford, it’s probably the only one of the HYPMS whose campus can compare in size with Duke. The others obviously aren’t as big. The reason for the comparison isn’t that Duke is exciting, it’s to point out that Duke isn’t “one of the smallest colleges for its prestige.” The city of Durham however is probably on the small side but can still hold its own with say Ithaca, Hanover, New Haven, and Hartford

^agreed. i was about to say that new haven, ithaca, and princeton essentially have the same feel as durham (although princeton is a little more upscale).

HAHAHAHAHA (sorry this isn’t at any of you guys but I just remembered something funny)
ok so you guys just reminded me that Cornell and Dartmouth are essentially located in like the middle of no where (ok maybe its not like totally no where but still compared to many other colleges–NU, outside of Chicago–OSU, Columbus–USC, LA California)
Ithaca (Cornell) I believe is smaller than Durham and so is Hanover (Dartmouth)
The surrounding area of Hanover is predominately wooded area and so is Cornell (although less). Now I’m probably exagerated a little bit more but of course Ithaca, and Hanover are definitely not bigger than Durham
