Urban Planning

Hey Guys,

Who here is applying for a Master's in Urban Planning? I am also considering a PhD in History down the road. Probably at the same university. How does this work? Should I only get an MUP if I want to be a professional planner? Or is it possible to get the MUP and later History degree later? I want to teach urban and social history.

I don't know too much but I looked into the MUP at one stage. I think it is mostly a professional degree. For a Phd in history you don't really need to have a masters first. Also, some planning schools offer a Phd and I don't think you need a masters before applying. I don't know what you qualifications, but check out MIT their program is really top-notch for Urban Planning.

Can you study urban history and urban planning without the MUP degree?

You mean at a Phd level? My impression is that you don't need an MUP before doing a Phd in planning. They are totally different degrees one for professional work and the other for academia. I may be wrong though so the best thing would be to check with each school.

I don't want a PhD in Urban Planning.

You can check out Masters of Public Policy and Masters of Public Administration programs for specializations in urban planning.
