Urbana-Champaign

Alright.

So, I took the time to visit UIUC last week, and overall I was very impressed. I thought the campus was immaculate (especially the engineering facilities, which I'm interested in), and that overall it seemed like it would be a great place to go to school.

However, there was one thing I wasn't too impressed with, and that was the town of Urbana-Champaign itself. Seemed to me that it would get old quickly, or that there wasn't much to do around, etc. Can anyone give me some redeeming qualities that might make me want to be a fightin' Illini?

just had a whole big reply typed out for you and it asked me to log in when i pressed reply. So it was gone when i did that. GRRRRR. So as a result you're getting an outline of my more helpful post.

Your assessment is pretty correct. Champaign-Urbana can get old, and does from time to time. There are no redeeming geographical features like lakes, rivers, beaches, mountains etc to act as a lifeline for social activity. BUT you could do worse. There's plenty of going out to be done if you like to drink, and most people who do don't really care where they go as long as there's booze. (Bars are 19 to get in, getting the alcohol is cake after thats done) If drinking isn't your thing, or you just don't like to do it all that much, there's plenty else going on. Poker Tourneys, LAN parties for video games like halo or WoW, sporting events or just pick-up games at the rec centers CIRCE and IMPE, Bowling at the Union, Frisbee on the quad, and very often, University sponsored events called IlliNites that are held at the Illini Union and usually offer something worthwhile..or at least a good way to meet people and just kinda relax. I've also got some friends that are in a minor program that takes a lot of trips to off-road go-kart places and paintball fields...so they must be around here somewhere. Chicago is not THAT far away if you want to get outa town with your friends for a night or weekend, and there are some campgrounds not far from campus for some time away too. There are always clubs to get involved with too so you're not twiddling your thumbs on weeknights (but how anyone finds time to twiddle thumbs between homework and hangin with friends i'll never know.)

In short, you could absolutely do better than Chambana. A comparable university like UW Madison's campus would rock the socks off Champaign Urbana, so would great cities like Boston, NY for NYU, and even smaller ones like Austin, but a lot of big ten schools will be about the same or worse. Purdue, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan....i'd imagine people do about the same things there as most of those are just as isolated as we are here. You won't regret champaign urbana the way you would regret DeKalb or Charleston or Macomb or Bloomington (NIU, EIU, WIU, IL State), the size of the university definitely lends some spark.

You can do better, you can do worse. Depends on what your other choices are. (my outline turned into just retyping it, oh well)

Edit: Forgot live music. If you like that, there's plenty. Jeff Tweedy from Wilco is here tomorrow night, Blue Man Group was here a week or two back, I saw Jack's Mannequin about a month ago, Lucky Boys Confusion a month before that. Sometimes the names are small, but I've seen bigger groups like Dave Matthews Band and Jimmy Eat World too.

yea, usually you won't be that bored. either you'll have a lot of homework or you'll be hanging out w/ friends. some things you can do to kill time: try out for a theatre play, take dance lessons, any type of lesson actually, join plenty of clubs, party, go to dance clubs like the canopy club, do homework or study (there will be lots of times where you will have no choice but to anyways), go the Market Place, volunteer, watch movies, get a job and yea I'll post whatever else comes to my mind. i mean there will ALWAYS be posters up that invite people to something, ALWAYS. so basically you just have to be open to try new things.
generally if you are not a total recluse, you will make some key friends where you will hang out with a lot the first few days you are here and they will basically become your core group of friends.

Thinking about getting a girl at the first place? You really do NOT to worry about boredom at UofIllinois, one simple reason is that UIllinois is so large that by walking class to class will already make you so tired at the end of the day.

Speaking of entertainment, I think there's nothing much you can beside going to party and drinking. UIllinois ranking has gone down this year because we party too much. This place is like an oasis in midst of desert.

I came from California and expected to have some fun here, you'll often have tests and quizzes 2 or 3 times in a row during a week. do you think you really gonna get time to hang-out? You really need an efficient time-management otherwise you'll flunk. The pressure of job-hunting haunts you every moment.

"UIllinois ranking has gone down this year because we party too much. This place is like an oasis in midst of desert."

Actually, According to US News & report, Illinois' ranking went up one from 42 to 41.

Shut up dude. you bought report of year 1006. too old

"Shut up dude. you bought report of year 1006. too old"

Uh no. I'm talking about the latest 2007 rankings. In the 2006 rankings UIUC was ranked 42, now it is ranked 41.

As long as the parties are good and the chicks are hot, Illinois is pretty good for me :)

I haven't heard good things about the girls at UIUC...

When i visited UIUC there werent too many good looking girls.

But unrelated...UIUC did not impress me at all. The campus was beautiful and I come from a huge high school, but for some reason I didnt seem like I would fit in and enjoy myself on campus. I think one of the factors was the town of Urbana and Champaign itself.
Although it was a small college town, I didnt really get that feel until I was a few blocks from the university. For example at IU in Bloomington, I got the close knit college town feel from 5 miles out of Bloomington.

"I haven't heard good things about the girls at UIUC..."

"When i visited UIUC there werent too many good looking girls."

...did you come on like ugly girls day? or a saturday or sunday morning when all the hot girls are about halfway through their sleeping?

It really all depends on your taste i guess though. There are a heck of a lot of sorority girls and I find a lot of the time i'm not into them, but i won't deny they are beautiful physically.

How about the guys at UIUC? ;) ;)

i never have any free time, so champaign/urbana don't bother me at all... pledge a frat, thatll take up some time and be fun. the girls are hot here. if you join a frat (a good one), you will encounter even more hot girls. the parties here are friggin epic, so if thats what you wanna see, you will see it here.

illinites is pretty gay. they advertise 25 cent sbarro pizza, but you get there and they only have cheese and the slices are half the size of normal sbarro slices, and they charge tax on the 25 cents... what the heezy!! i went last time and there was an improv team from chicago and they were VERY funny, but thats about it. I pretty much see illinites as the university reaching out to the students that dont want to go to the bars or frats and get wasted, which is where you will find any cool people.

HALLOWEEN WEEKEND!! AHHHH!

unless ur at clybourne

I actually visited all day on a Monday..there were a few hott girls but then again there were many more not as hott ones. Just your preference I guess..

first and armory baby!!!! i love haloween!!

^ I just went to neros...best fries ever. 5$ gyros and fries after midnight. And with daylight savings it's like...12:03am...the night is young and i don't know what to do with myself for the next 2-3 hours.

UIUC seems like a wonderful place to get an education and to have some serious fun. Wish me luck when I send in my application as a transfer in 2008.

Thanks for the responses guys. Really, I'm not much into the whole drinking scene. And if I do drink, I'm not in it to get plastered-

Though I'm gonna have to disagree about the women status. When I visited, I gotta say, out of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Northwestern, I think Illinois had the hottest girls. Why, I have no idea, but they were there.

first and armory? aahhhahaha

sorry.
