Sorry for flagging this post urgent, I'm not trying to be self-centered, this actually is time sensitive. I was notified of an acceptance to U. of Michigan school of engineering yesterday (1/30). I am from Virginia and am eligible for the Bell scholarship. The application for the scholarship explicitly states "All application materials must be received by February 1, 2006 to be considered." Even if I finish the app by tonight, it will be postmarked today or tomorrow (2/1/2006 - the deadline) and will not arrive until after the deadline. Moreover, the teacher recommendations will most probably take more time than that. It seems pretty harsh to not consider ANYTHING after the deadline but if those are the rules then those are the rules? Is that how these scholarships work? Is it worth applying for the scholarship, considering that I was only notified of my acceptance yesterday. What should I do?

Probably not worth the time at this point. Michigan is all about applying early. If you don't apply early, you miss out.

Give the office a phone call tomorrow. Ask for an extension of some sort. All they can tell you is no; I'd at least try. Give it a whirl.

Thansk for the replies. I submitted my app end of November and was marked complete something like Dec. 2nd. At the time I thought that was pretty early. In retrospect, it obviously was not.

Yeah, end of November is a bit late for Michigan - like dsmo said, it's all about applying early, if you talk to any admissions rep that's what they'll tell you. Anyway, it's worth remembering in these sorts of situations that it's best to ask the people who know - the people who are paid by the university to answer questions like these. They certainly don't bite, and they're generally sympathetic, especially if none of it was any fault of your own.

Give the appropriate office a call. Can't hurt.
