I just got note after believing that I would be taking a gap year next year that I have to go off to college. I was accepted to both of the places I applied to, but I'll probably transfer after.
In reference to academics, social and town and overall package.
WHICH SCHOOL?
Ithaca or UVM. I'm stressing out big time, need decision by friday.
Thanks all.

Whichever is cheaper.

You haven’t even decided and you are contemplating a transfer? Why?

I can only echo both of these questions!

I think that the OP means they will eventually transfer from either Ithaca or UVM later, but wants to know where to commit prior to his/her gap year…? That’s how I read it…

What is your intended major?

If you really want to go some place else and are looking to transfer out later, why spend more money than you need. I will concur with # 2, go to where is cheaper.

rodney, my impression is that the OP has just learned that s/he will not be able to do a gap year, but instead must choose to attend one of these schools next year. IMHO one can’t make an intelligent suggestion as to why the OP should pick one school over another if one doesn’t know WHY this transfer is assumed: presumably there is something else s/he would like to do.

FWIW, Ithaca is supposed to have strong programs in music/theater/performance-related things and communications careers. Ithaca is a nice college town, due to the presence of Ithaca and Cornell. Ithaca is obviously the less dominant school of this pair, both academically and in size. I don’t know how that plays out locally.

U VM is small for a state u, although almost twice as big as Ithaca, and located in a reportedly great college town. A bit of a party school rep, but academically respectable and people really like it there. It’s also probably a bit cheaper than Ithaca if you are out of state, and a lot cheaper if you are in state. U VM attracts a lot of people who are into outdoor winter sports and the like.

The students’ stats are very, very close.

Unless you are really interested in the music/theater/communications area, I’d personally probably go with U VM.

All things being EQUAL I would choose Vermont.

Ithaca is known for theater, music, physical therapy, communications and speech pathology.
As a local, I would say that IC and Cornell students are pretty separate. Some Cornell students look down on IC and call it “Ithaca Kollege” and stupid stuff like that because it’s an easier school, but it is a top notch school no doubt. At IC there will be a lot of interesting people, and people from all social groups which is one really cool thing.

Cornell has Collegetown right off campus which has tons of restaurants and little shops which are fun. It’s also got some popular bars and a nightclub. IC mostly has stuff going on right on campus. It’s farther from downtown Ithaca and the campus is more secluded anyway. Both places have parties. A lot. Cornell of course has their frat parties, but in the Circle aparments by IC, there’s always a lot going on. One thing that brings unity is Cornell hockey. That’s just an Ithaca thing.

If there are any specifics people want to know about IC, I can try to help.

Singdance: Do Ithaca students attend Cornell Hockey games??

A lot of them do…CU hockey is huge in Ithaca in general. And no IC sports are that big.
