URGENT: Does INTEL STS allow MICE??!! HELP NEEDED

Hi all,
I am DAYS away from submitting my project to Intel STS and I have some serious questions about whether or not mice are allowed in projects submitted to Intel STS.

If mice are allowed, what kinds of procedures are allowed?? I was looking at the finalists' abstracts and several of them seemed to have used mice in their projects, but I'm petrified of getting disqualified :(

ANY HELP or COMMENTS would be very much appreciated!!! If you have submitted to Intel STS before, did your project involve mice?

Thank you!!!!!

If I recall, don’t you have to fill out an authorization paper for testing involving non-human vertebrates? Look on STS’s website

you do but it says:

“Projects being conducted in a registered institution or laboratory where animal experimentation is taking place and in which the student will only have physical contact with the animal(s) under the handling and husbandry conditions stated above; and
i. the student works with non-living material (e.g., tissue, blood) that has been supplied to them by the supervising scientist; and
ii. the animal(s) involved is/are not sacrificed solely for the student’s project; and
iii. the project the student designs and implements begins with non-living material. (No procedures, invasive or otherwise, were conducted on live vertebrate animals for the student-designed project); and
iv. the student was not involved in the collection of data, directly or indirectly (through media or video), using invasive or intrusive experimentation that causes more than momentary pain or distress to the vertebrate animal(s).”

What counts as a procedure??!! AHH

ps the rules can be found here
