Hey guys, for those of you who have applied/will apply:

How did you package your graded & supplemental essay since we have to submit it by snail mail? A cover page??

Should we submit supplemental supplemental writing here, for example columns I've written?

Would it be awkward to submit paragraphs from a paper I did as well, because I can't submit the entire thing as it is a 13 1/4 pg research paper. But it was amazing. And graded. But that's not really important, it was just unique and well-written.

Last year, my D just submitted whatever was required (the graded essay and the supplemental essay) in a plain, manilla envelope addressed to the Admissions Office. No cover letter or anything required-they know what it is. Obviously, make sure that your name is on the paperwork so it can be put in your admissions file.

If you are planning to include some extra supplementary writing, you might as well do it in this package. In this case, you might want to label it somehow so they know it is a supplementary submission.

One thing she did last year was to include a pre-paid postcard with all extra submission materials (she's a musician and sent in CD's) or with anything that she sent via snail mail. It provided great peace of mind because the admissions office sent back the post card and that way she knew they had received her package.

I agree with CollegeMom08 as long as your name is on the paper there is no reason to include a cover sheet. My S used a Priority mail envelope. If my memory serves me, I believe that last year the instructions clearly stated that they did not want research papers.

This might be a stupid question but i'll ask it anyway.
What exactly is the difference between a research paper and a reasonal paper? If someone could give me some examples, i'd really appriciate it.
Would for example a argumentative essay written about a book but with other facts included be a research paper?

(i'm an international ;), so some of the terminology make me confused. :P)

Great, thank you both! I just felt it would be kind of awkward for them to open up the envelope with two essays in it and nothing else...and the postcard is a really smart idea! I will definitely try to do that. Thanks again!!

saaammie I will attempt to answer your question...but I'd appreciate other responses. In my experience, research papers have been written mostly for history class, with a thesis and you do research with many sources, both primary and secondary. I've mostly written analytical essays for English (although some for history). They have theses too, but the paper is more analysis (wow, so much for definitions without the word in them!) of the book using the thesis...I don't really think this makes sense at all. I just kind of understand it. I think your argumentative essay would be ok. But again, I'd appreciate if someone helped me out!

I just turned in my supplemental materials two days ago, so maybe I can help :)

About your research paper snippet idea... In all honesty, I don't think it's a good idea for a couple of things:

1) the directions clearly state no research papers, and while I understand your desire to impress them by cutting out the best snippets and sending it to them, that's not giving them a full view of your analytical process (through an analytical paper) and how the teacher reacted to it (through the teacher comments)...
2) it'll probably give them a headache if you don't follow rules exactly. They do have 6000 other essays to read, so if you change it up a bit and try to... not fool them, but play with the rules a little bit, they'll just be a little frustrated
3) taking snippets out of a 13-page (or whatever) paper doesn't give them a clear view of who you are as a critical thinker, more just a view of who you WANT them to see... I understand that we're all picking out (what we hope/think are) our best essays, but we're keeping them in-tact, to see for the good and bad parts. This gives a clearer view of us as students, and I highly doubt they'd reject anyone who isn't "perfect" in the essay

So... yeah. You seem kind of intent on doing this, and if you decide not to listen to my advice that's totally your prerogative, but in all honesty I would suggest you to go with a different graded essay. But maybe that's just me.

thanks, tan2007. i was going to submit another essay anyway, the research paper thing was kind of on a whim, and now, i realize, a totally misguided one. chalk it up to ED anxiety, i guess! thanks again. good luck to you!
