Please I really need your help

The engineering program at UMDCP is the only one I can really give some solid information on. The average superscored SAT is for admitted students into the A. James Clark School of Engineering is 1407. Please keep in mind that UMD doesn’t count the writing section in their admissions process, so that score is CR+M only, and is therefore out of 1600. Also, the Engineering program at UMD focuses more on the math score than anything, the average score for admitted engineering students on the Math section of the SAT was around a 730.

However, since you’re an international applicant (UMD only admits a select amount of international students each year, which makes it more competitive) and your GPA is a little low for the engineering program, you should probably be aiming for scores in the 75th percentile to set yourself apart. So, a score of 1490 or above out of 1600 would be very beneficial, as would a score of at least 770 on the Math.

The engineering school at UMD is one of the most selective programs at UMD-CP, and there are limited seats. Admissions is very competitive, and most admitted applicants score pretty high.

I’d say your never scores are anything in the low 1300s. You need at least a 1400, imo.

Your maybe scores are anything in the low 1400s.

Your safe(ish, admissions is never in absolutes) scores would be anything in the high 1400s - 1500s (I would aim for 1500s). Try and score as highly on the Math section as possible.

Good luck!

@nuhsgrad‌ is it well ranked in mech engineering and what ECs do count there?
BTW thanks for replying.
Are u studying at UMD-CP?

Gave my SAT today expecting good marks B-)

Do any of these universities consider SAT II score?

Please look at the college websites and C-section of each school’s common data set. It will give you some idea.

@Daemon077: Nope, I’m not currently a student at UMD. I’m actually still a senior in high school, haha. But, hopefully I will be in 2015 (fingers crossed!). I live in Maryland, and I’ve wanted to go to UMD for a looooooong time, so I know a bit about the school. From what I’ve heard, ECs do count quite a bit at UMD, but obviously test scores do count a little bit more. I’d say the order of importance would go like this:

(1) GPA/class rigor
(2) SAT scores
(3) ECs
(4) Personal statement/recs.

…buuuuut you could say the same for a lot of schools. However, I think a great essay/resume could possibly overpower average SAT scores if they are not what’s expected. Maybe. The only other bump in the road for UMD that I can foresee for you is that it seems like you didn’t apply for priority (i.e. by Nov. 1st) which puts you at a bit of a disadvantage because College Park takes the majority of it’s acceptances from that applicant pool (around 80%, according to the admissions counselor I spoke to). The RD admissions cycle will be a lot a more competitive.

I’d say UMD engineering program is pretty respectable, they offer a lot of opportunities and fairly well-known name in the engineering world from what I’ve heard (which is not much, considering I’m firmly on the liberal arts side of the tracks–but still). Maryland is in the top 3 recruiter picks for engineering, edging out UMich, VTech, TX A&M and others. If you want more than my (admittedly limited) opinion, I would suggest checking out this thread:

and this one as well: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1481313-help-decision-engineering-major.html

Most alums have nothing but good things to say about UMD on here, and I think that says a lot! I’m crossing my fingers for you! Hopefully we both get some good news in 2015!

Oh, and UMD doesn’t even bother with SAT IIs. I went to an open house about a month ago and someone asked the same exact question, and the admissions rep said “Don’t bother sending them in, we don’t look at them.”

Thanks Bro.
