URGENT: How much does it cost?

i know my question is somewhat naive but i was wondering: how much does it cost - on average- to become a doctor (not counting any Financial aid/grants)?

Step 1) Undergrad = ~200,000 for 4 years at a private uni
Step 2) Med school = ~240,000 for the 4 years of medical school

what's next?

THANK YOU.

I think most residencies actually pay you a living stipend in the range os $35,000 a year. So you won't be going into more debt during residency (minus interest on your already established debt), but you won't be living lavishly until you finish your residency.

Which will be substantial, given the amounts you will have had to take out to pay for med school.

And depending on income, this could still take quite a while

...welcome to medicine

It's not a living stipend, it's a salary...and actually most are in the $44k - 46k range for interns at the moment, and there are raises from year to year. Considering that the high end of salaries, just at the programs I've interviewed at, is above $50k, I think it's safe to say that by the time the current crop of recently accepted medical students (those who will be first years in August) becomes residents, the average salary will be over 50k. It's certainly possible there will be a massive overhaul of healthcare financing by then, but any affects on resident salaries is going to have to be joined with changes to resident debt expectations.

While it's possible (even likely) there will be changes to the debt accrued during medical school, don't expect those changes to do much for your undergraduate loans.
