I'm panicking. It says 'the interview should be scheduled by December 10'.

Which I havent done.

Does this mean it has to be SCHEDULED for December 10 or CONDUCTED by December 10?
I.e. if I call my interviewer today (i.e. before Dec 10) and arrange for an interview next week (i.e. after Dec 10) is this ok?

You can contact MIT at interview@mit.edu and explain your dilemma. They'll either waive the interview or sort it out.

I emailed Kim Hunter, head of the educational council, about a similar situation last week, and she said

At this point, the RD applicant should contact the EC office to see if there is another EC in the area that he could contact. Waiting much longer means he could run out of time.

Absolutely,
I am a coordinator for my region, and it is not uncommon for a student to have his EC changed. I must have reassigned a dozen or more this year. Sometimes the EC's schedules simply do not coincide with the students, sometimes I have an EC who falls sick in my region, or has other personal issues that requires them to reduce their interviewee count. Sometimes an EC just resigns. Do not fret, a change of EC does not count against you in any way. Not having an interview is another thing. Just contact the admissions office and let them know.

When there really are extenuating circumstances, we really do try to help (I conducted an interview after Christmas one year due to specific unusual circumstances), but when someone simply neglects to contact their EC by the 10th without any justification, then we are much less likely to be sympathetic.

When you contact your new EC, let them know that you have just been reassigned by the admissions office. This way they will clearly know that you have not just been waiting until the last minute.
