How long is the Why Penn essay allowed to be on the common app? It says 7900 characters, but I've heard one page from previous years? Is this true? Please help, I'd really appreciate it! There is not enough room on one page to express everything I love about Penn!

anyone, please help?!

On Penn's paper supplement it says not to exeed one page.

thanks for the reply. Any clue on why the limit is so much longer on common app?

I called admissions and they said the limit is one page. So a new question arises...can i manipulate the margins and font to make it fit on one page? like make the margins .5 instead of 1 inch?

I would recommend pasting your essay into the Common App website to see if it fits in one page. If it does, feel free to change your font size (no less than 10 pt) and margins. If it doesn't, cut it down or else it'll look like too many words.

OK, well I'm starting to worry about this. My essays are a huge part of my application, so I decided to take a risk with a different approach (it still answers the question) but it is on the longer side. I'm applying using the common app and on the supplement it says 7,900 characters to type right there, or uploading a document. I have my essay typed and it is less than 7,900 characters, but to fit on one page I changed the font to arial narrow (size 11) and the margins to .5. Please tell me this will be acceptable...

Wow. they might notice the extra number of words on your page. I dont know.

haha, I know they will notice the length of it...
but technically it is still limited to one page? there were no specifications on margins...

you're fine

You should stick to the one page maximum for the essays. 1 inch to the default setting (I think it's 1.25 in) is standard for the margins.

Unless you want to seem like a fool, keep it to 1 page, calibiri 11 with standard margins. you should be able to say all you need to with the standard format
