I asked two of my teachers for recommendation letters a month ago, and both agreed.
One of the teachers have submitted his recommendation but I can’t reach the other teacher (I don’t stay at my school so no chance to meet him)
The due date is tomorrow and I really need to submit my common app.
Is it okay if recommendation letters are late? I know some schools say it’s okay but I haven’t received any answers from JHU or U Mich. Does anyone know the policies for there schools?
I doubt either school has a policy that says they will automatically disqualify you. I’m sure their official response is something along the lines of “We cannot guarantee…” etc. Hopefully you have tried calling and emailing these schools multiple times over the period of at least a few days (weeks would look even better) to demonstrate that you were proactive and tried addressing the issue. Emails are less likely to be answered promptly, but they are timestamped, which is always good. I would expect committees to be less likely to punish you if they see you were concerned and at least attempted to correct the situation. I would start begging another teacher now as a contingency plan to hopefully have an alternative letter sent within the next few days. I would also continue to pester this other teacher (in your teacher’s defense, a month isn’t too much time), and ask the writer to mention in the letter that they accidentally missed the due date you requested. Make sure when you request a letter you send as much useful information as possible to the writer so they can write you an effective letter with less effort on their part.
Submit your Common App. There is no need to wait for the school to receive recommendation letters before you submit; the two are not linked.
You’ll need to reach out to the second teacher and let him/her know that it looks like the recommendation hasn’t be received. Don’t assume it wasn’t sent. Ask for the teachers help in promptly resolving it.
