Should I choose Bates over Boston University? They are very different places, but BU seems more fun. Will I get bored at Bates, or will the campus activities keep me busy? I think Bates' academics is more rigorous, but Boston sounds much nicer than Maine.

MUCH HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED :)

Post on the Bates forum and you’ll get answers from Bates students.

Is “fun” your criterion? If so then maybe B.U. will be more “fun;” it’s right in the middle of a fantastic city with loads of other universities and has about 10 times as many undergrads as Bates. I think B.U. is a great place but at Bates you will probably grow as a person more, will have closer interactions with profs, and will probably get a wider and deeper education. It is really an apples to oranges comparison.

Fun is part of my criterion, but definitely not as major as academic rigor.

I agree with that comment completely. Do you think that Bates will give me greater opportunities for Grad school?

Thanks again!

Is Grinnell out of the running now?

Sorry for the misunderstanding MaineLonghorn. This post is for my friend! As for me, I am still deciding between Grinnell and Bates :)

Between those 2 schools the opportunities for grad school will arise more from you and the kind of work you do, not the name on the diploma.

^OK, no problem! Everyone is different, but I prefer Maine to Boston! My husband’s sister lives in Boston, so we go down fairly often. I am always very happy to cross the bride on the way back into Maine! I find most people in Boston are rushed and not very friendly (to put it politely).

Thanks for your input, it makes a lot of sense. Any other ideas?

Thanks again MainLonghorn, it’s quite rare to see someone prefer Maine to Boston! This would be much help to my friend :D

We actually know people who commute from southern Maine to Boston for work. We also know people who would love to be able to find work in Maine so that they could move here. It’s a wonderful place to live. I grew up in Texas, but I’m really glad we moved here.

I live in Thailand but I wish I could visit both schools to make my decision easier. However, Maine doesn’t sound so bad after all :)
