So I am filling up my fafsa right now and I am not getting these questions to show up online!

Parents Received Supplemental Security Income? (question 75)
Parents Received Food Stamps? (question 76)
Parents Received Free/Reduced Price Lunch? (question 77)
Parents Received TANF? (question 78)
Parents Received WIC? (question 79)

Both my parents working income are both 0...

My dad gets Supplemental Security Income and my mom gets TANF and family gets food stamps.

I dont want to submit my fafsa and get nothing cuz basically my app right now is both parents working income as 0 and everything else 0 as well. I really need to answer question 75-78 and they're not showing up for me....

PLEASE HELP ASAP!!! Any help is appreciated.

^ You sure? Shouldn’t it be the opposite? If your parents makes under a certain amount, they want to know if you’re getting welfare such as SSI and food stamps?

My app is really blank right now. Everything is $0. I’ve tried different answers to the previous questions but still question 75-78 wont show up!!

I’d call them and ask, but if your parents both make $0, then I doubt the government would care how much in “food stamps” they get. Either way your EFC will be 0 since none of that money is going to be used for college.

Answer those questions honestly. You shouldn’t skip them. They are questions which help determine the auto $0 and simplified needs test. If you qualify for either of these, you do not need to report ASSETS…those are the questions you don’t answer…unless YOUR STATE requires them…some do.

Perhaps Swimcatsmom will respond. Maybe this student doesn’t need to answer these questions because he already qualified for the auto $0? I don’t know.

I know I’m only a student, but I think that’s the case. We had a FAFSA rep come to our school, and he said the fafsa was made easier this year. Allowing some to skip questions due to income guidelines. If you qualify for the automatic efc of 0, I don’t believe they want the other information, and if you don’t have the option then I wouldn’t worry about it. I talked to rentof2 about this. Also, if you qualify for an EFC of 0, I’m sure you’ll get audited anyway, so if they want the other information, they’ll ask?

I called the fafsa customer service and they told me that I dont need to answer them because supposedly if my parents working income is under $30,000 or something like that, I’m qualified for the auto 0 efc…

I dont know if its really that simple…, maybe they’ll follow up and ask questions later?

Thanks for the responses in here. I really appreciate it.

Zero EFC–some get audited (“verified” is the term), some don’t. It’s pretty random even with “no visible means of support.” Just get papers ready in case you are verified–tax forms, possible paperwork from TANF, food stamps, or Social Security about those sources of income. Those agencies can print it out for you. Schools sometimes give you only 10-12 days to produce it. Want the money? Send in the papers required pronto!

So when do questions 75-79 show up during the online applications process if not when a parent’s income is zero? I mean, do the questions only appear for folks within a prescribed income range? We do have parental income…we do need to answer “yes” to Q 77, Federal Free/Reduced-price school lunch…but like the original poster, we’re not given the option to answer that question.

ALSO, under the “School Selection” category, we are not given the option to answer Q’s 31-32, Are you insterested in work study and Are you planning to become a teacher.

The auto zero is given if income is lower than $30,000 a year. Perhaps these questions come up when the income is higher than that but under $50K? If one’s income is under $50k and they can answer yes to one of those questions, I believe they qualify for simplified needs test whereby they do not have to report assets.

I’m just guessing. Swimcatsmom will know the answer.

Ooh yeah, I remember now. I had a family income of 29k, and I didn’t have to answer those questions either. However, there’s an option at the bottom of the income page that lets you choose to answer them if you want (which I did).

Anyways Joker, if you want to answer that questions that badly, I think you can, just look for the check box at the end of the income page. I ended up reporting all of our assets and everything, even though I didn’t have to (I have a good reason for this btw).

Yosup, it is my understanding that if you do NOT need to report the assets, they will NOT be considered in the FAFSA calculation regardless. Some states require asset reporting even with auto 0 and simplified needs. BUT that is for state purposes…at least that is my understanding.

If you didn’t need to report the assets, your school will not consider them for any reason. I can’t imagine what your “good reason for reporting assets” was…but it doesn’t matter. If not required, they will be disregarded.

The option is “Do you want to skip the remaining questions about your and your parents’ income and assets?” I checked no and they gave me questions 80+. Not 75-78.

Oh ok, thanks thumper. I knew that the government wouldn’t consider assets, but I thought U of M might. I put down my parents assets because they decreased significantly from when I reported them on the PROFILE in November. If it won’t matter at all though, that’s even better.

Sorry joker, I don’t know then. It did ask me about food stamps, free lunch, etc though, even though I qualified for 0 efc. Either way, it won’t matter I guess.

Not related to my original question, so I received my student aid report in my email just now, but when I click it, it says “untrusted connection” in both firefox and ie. Is that normal?
