I need a question answered ASAP, as the registration date for Fall semester is tomorrow

Background: Mechanical Engineering student looking to apply to UCSD this fall (TAG)

My Fall and Spring semesters are scheduled to look like this:

Fall 2009:
- Math 254
- Physics 196
- Chemistry 201 + L
- Social Science

Spring 2010:
- Math 255
- Physics 197
- C++
- Social Science

If I followed through with this schedule, I would have all my IGETC completed and all my major prereqs completed by the end of Spring.

However I was wondering if I could maybe push the Fall social science to spring and not take C++ (which is a major prereq, but not part of IGETC) until the summer of 2010, in order to ease the load of Fall. The new schedule would look something like this:

Fall 2009:
- Math 254
- Physics 196
- Chemistry 201 + L

Spring 2010:
- Math 255
- Physics 197
- Social Science
- Social Science

Summer 2010:
- C++

My understanding is that I need IGETC completed by the end of spring in order to TAG and that having the major prereqs completed would be beneficial, but not hurt the overall Guarantee process.

My question is, how detrimental (if at all) would it be for my transferer process to UCSD if I didnt take the C++ until the Summer of 2010 (even though all the requirements are required to be completed by the end of Spring 2010).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as my counselors were somewhat unhelpful when I came to them for help.

Don’t stress, you need IGETC for TAG but when it comes to an impacted engineering major your pre-reqs are more important in terms of admission than being TAG eligible. So IMO I would take C++ in lieu of a social science.

Well, I thought IGETC is unnecessary for any science and Engineering major. Couple of my friends got into Berkeley, LA, SD BioChem and Electrical Eng without IGETC. But UCeric is absolutely correct, pre-reqs are the most important for engin major. as long as you complete ur course and maintain a solid GPA, u basically IN! Good LUCK

If your major is included in TAG then TAG before all else.

Only IF your major is somehow not covered under TAG THEN do Prereqs before all else.
i have no idea what the last two guys are talking about.

^ Well at UCSD it is useful to finish IGETC as it will exempt you from the majority of your colleges GE requirements (if you finish IGETC unless you’re in Revelle you will only have 2-3 classes to take for GE). But in the OP’s case Mechanical Engineering will be impacted for Fall 2011 so pre-req completion is very important to be competitive for admission.

@Mortimer: as of fall 2011 Mechanical Engineering is impacted so it’s unlikely you could just TAG into it with missing classes as UCSD says they only take the top applicants (GPA + major prep) and not everyone who meets the 3.0 + IGETC tag criteria

@UCeric
Either you can TAG or you can’t, what do you mean? TAG is a guaranteed admission.
If you can TAG under the major then you TAG first.

GPA + major prep is for non-tagged students, Or they no longer offer the major under TAG, it cannot be both.

*edit
UCSD TAG applies to general admission, not guaranteed for impacted majors.

Ah ok, so you have a choice. You can attempt to TAG with an ALTERNATE. In this case youd be guaranteed admission but perhaps not into your major.

OR

You could finish major prereqs and go in blind to an impacted major. To answer this question i’d need more info.

Thanks for the responses.

With IGETC, I have guaranteed admission to the school, but not necessarily the major I selected (meaning impacted majors, meaning Mech. Engineering, meaning me
)

I think I’m just gonna go with my original schedule and tough it out, completing both IGETC and major prereqs.

@ anonymousity

That’s what I would do. I couldn’t find any info on the engineering program but biology has a page that says their major will be impacted in 2011 as well and they will only accept 200 transfer students. Those with the highest GPA and major completion. So unless you think you’re gonna be one of those select few, i’d TAG as well, just in case.

I know its gonna be tough, so goodluck, the situation sucks, soon every UC will use a TAP

^Ah you’re right mortimer, he can TAG and will be guaranteed admission to the university but not necessarily his major, my bad.

To the OP: good luck on toughing it out, luckily for me every social science class I took was a throw away and took almost no effort outside of class so hopefully they wont make your schedule unbearable.

If you’re in engineering, GPA > prereqs > IGETC. I got in with less than half prereqs done for Comp E and no plans to finish IGETC in the application. Same for my friends in bioengineering. Take C++ just in case though, not a tough class at all.

@sunnyseas
most of my frds got in without IGETC as well, IGETC is unnecessary because some science major have different GE requirement to fulfill.

@Anynomousity
U should check with ur counselor in ur college. again, IGETC does not required for science major especially Enginerring. Frds of mine who get into UC Berkeley did not take any GE classes for IGETC purpose. Because if you need to take care both IGETC and major-rep classes, u definitely need more time than other student who had different major. UC only want u to have ur Major-pre finish by the time you transfer or more than half of you major-pre done by the time you apply. Just check with you counselor or make a call to UCSD or the UC you going to apply. Why waste your time to take extra class which u dont need to?

Prereqs for engineering majors are more important than IGETC. Get as many math and physics classes done as possible. I just got in for Electrical Engineering and I didn’t do tag. I still have a few GE classes left, but I had all but one class from assist.org done for electrical engineering and a 3.5 gpa at the time I applied (3.6 now lol).

I went to speak with the counselors this morning, and the counselor lady I usually meet with (who’s very helpful) wasn’t in office. The person I got stuck with was worse than unhelpful and literally said “I have no answer for you.”

As far as taking classes I don’t need to, well I’ve already completed a majority of IGETC and prereq courses (like I said in the OP, if I complete the classes I listed in the schedule, I will have completed both IGETC and major prereqs) so unfortunately its a little late to work around classes I wont be need, especially since registration is tomorrow and I might as well finish out IGETC since I already have a good portion of it completed.

I’ve had a pretty tough schedule my entire time at CCC and I’d say I’ve held up a decent GPA so far (3.55, woo deans list…), but I’m getting a bit worried now that mechanical engineering is gonna be impacted at UCSD the year I transfer, just my luck.

You need completed for TAG.
