I am currently filling out their Early Decision application and I noticed that it "encourages" students to take a foreign language subject test...I didn't though. I'm just wondering if it actually made a difference...like if you were admitted did you take a foreign language subject test?
Thanks.

I have a freshman at Penn and he did not take the foreign language subject test. He did however take 3 subject tests and scored above 750 on each. We contacted admissions last year and they said it would not be necessary, however you do need to take a placement test befor enrolling in classes. If you get a 650 or above on the language subject test you can usually be exempted from taking foreign language at Penn. Hope this helped. Good Luck!

did he apply to the CAS? I forgot to mention that…as that is where I will most likely apply.

Yes, he is in CAS.

I doubt it will make a difference but having some experience in a foreign language would be good in terms of course selection.

If you start from the lowest level foreign language courses, you’ll have to take it for 4 semesters which is really long…

no haha i am in AP spanish right now and am president of spanish honor society in my school…so you think if i have this language background i shouldn’t have any problems?

seriously this is urgent!! please help i would have to sign up to take the SAT II by friday if it actually is necessary

Seriously, not necessary. The most important thing is that you have taken at least 3 subject tests and scored well on them. They like to see Math II and 2 others. Right now, the most important things you should be concerned with is your essays and how strong your application is, in general. One language subject test will not make or break your application. If you are that concerned why don’t you just take the test?

I got in ED last year to CAS without taking an SAT, I took AP spanish in 11th, could not fit it senior year (need to take AP span for 2 years at my hs to take exam) and therefore did not take the exam.
a.k.a. don’t worry you should be fine, if you are highly confident you will do well take it, but if not then it’s not worth it

Yes I took math II and 3 other subject tests… you’re probably all right, I have been shoring up my essays and app all week haha

Don’t sweat it. It will not make one iota of difference. CAS just wants to make it easier so you don’t have to take departmental language placements and can be placed by default (i.e. your SAT II score).
