Hi,

I'm applying to Smith for fall 2015.
During the course of my high school years I went to three different schools - two private and ended at a public school.

When I go to the rec. section of the common app they want me to upload the school I graduated from.
I can get two good recs from there, for sure BUT I know that my sophomore year English teacher wrote me a shining recommendation and I would like to use it.
There is a third section that calls for an "other" recommendation that can be from a peer, family member, coach, etc.
can/should I use hers as the "other" recommendation?

Thanks so much

Thanks collegeconfidential. you all are so helpful.

I hope you are being facetious – considering only two hours elapsed from the time you posted your original post, and your post is about a specific women’s college that many members may not be familiar with … I tried searching Smith College to determine whether or not they have specific requirements about their teacher recs and it only sends me to the Common App. What I can tell you is that many selective schools like Smith ask that the two teacher recommendations be from a junior or senior year teacher, and some specify one math/science and one english. That being said, one could argue that since you have changed schools three times in four years, that your junior or sr year teachers might not know you well. So in the end, it really depends on you – if your junior year was split between two schools, then I would think that you could use the sophomore rec and in the “Other Info” part of the Common App, you note this. You can also simply contact the Smith rep for your geographic area. I know that the reps for Smith, Wellesley and Mt Holyoke are very willing to talk to applicants.

I’d also recommend you call admissions and ask them… however I can tell you that when my D applied to Smith she submitted a third letter of recommendation and they did not have any requirement (that I know of) on who it came from. (She sent one from her art teacher.) So it seems to me that it would be fine for you to send the soph teachers rec. But just call admissions to be sure, they are very helpful :)
