Urgent Rec Question!!

Hey all!

So I've got my AP Calc teacher writing one of my teacher recs; that's written in stone.

However, for my second one, I initially asked my Apologetics teacher (now, for those of you who don't go to a Christian prep school, it's basically Rhetoric mixed with Theology, debating Christianity, etc). He knows me verry well and has told me I'm probably his favorite student of all time. After I asked him to write my rec, he quickly glowed and responded with "I was hoping you'd ask!" and promptly invited me over to dinner with his wife the next day to talk about the college application process. Keep in mind he graduated from Harvard Law, practiced for many years, and then taught at many different schools, so I have no doubt that his letters would be nothing short of perfect. Also, he would serve as my "humanities" teacher rec, since he has read tons of my written work.

HOWEVER, after reading the directions off various admissions sites (most notably Princeton's), that say things along the lines of "pick 2 teachers from the following subjects: mathematics, science, history, or literature," I'm starting to second-guess myself. First of all, I'm not sure I want my religion prominently displayed in front of a largely secular adcom group (even though, he certainly wouldn't make it a point of his letters, he would still be seen as my APOLOGETICS teacher). Second of all, he's not technically a teacher in any of my "core" subjects.

Should I just ask my AP Lit teacher instead (who, although she has read and loved much of my written work, has only been teaching for a few years and can't really compare me to decades of students), or should I just stick with the good ol' prof??

Thanks in advance!!

dang he invited you over to dinner; thats cool. anyway, i think u should be fine.

you should e-mail the college

I haven't applied yet, man.

Haha I'm just wondering which one to use.

Use him as a supplemental recommendation for schools that accept them. Use two "core" subject teachers (math, science, foreign language, history/social science, English) as the primary required recommendations.

Before you use him as a supplemental recommendation, email the college to ask if sending one in is okay. Explain why you think he knows you better than other teachers do. A simple heads up should work well.

you should NOT let this rec go. if a teacher really wants to write one, you let him. it will be nothing but helpful. also, it will most likely be the most telling rec you will have. i doubt religion will play a large part. he will focus on the academic aspects of you as a student

but i agree, find another core rec
