(URGENT) sequential art

hi,
I have and undergrad degree in management, but have always had the urge to pursue a career in an art related or creative filed, after having worked in an art studio for the past 3 yrs, i'm definitely sure i want to pursue a career in sequential art(comic art). as there are no colleges or schools that offer such a course in my country, i will be applying to an art college in usa.
At present i'm considering Kubert School in Dover, New jersey. They specialize in teaching sequential art. i was quite sure of kubert school being my final choice until i was told they not rank very high and SCAD would be a better option.
Now I'm confused whether kubert school would be the right decision. As they are willing to take me in for there semester starting in September 2011 (which is barely 3 months away) and i don't not wish to make a wrong decision as the fee are quite steep once converted from my local currency.
Could some one please help me out and suggest if Kubert School is a good school for sequential art?

Quite honestly, I have never heard of this school. However my daughter was not interested in sequential art, so we would not have looked into that. I have heard of SCAD but not in relation to sequential art.
My youngest daughter loves Manga, but I’m fairly sure she is not interested in pursuing that as a career.
It would be best to do some research before you spend a lot of money…
Good luck

Check out the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont
[The Center for Cartoon Studies](http://www.cartoonstudies.org/)
Very impressive roster of visiting artists.

smarty dear it’s a lovely school in lovely state if bit of depressing town. I passed thru let’s see, 6years ago on the way to Hanover NH. The school wasn’t there yet I suppose?
I will keep eye on it.

OP
what kind of sequential art do you want/like to do?
Kubert School is a trade school for superhero comics. Marvel or DC, superman, spiderman, batman, that kind.
If you are into deep graphic novels or I don’t know what it is called, NYer or brain-sh cartoons, the school smarty recommended seems better choice.

If you want to go to legit art school and undecided what kind of comics, try SCAD, SVA or MCAD.
I came from Japan long ago and this is what I still think of sequantial art hype in US.
here is a thread from not so long ago. all ^info are in it.

D goes to MCAD in Minneapolis, MN where they have comic art - not just the superhero type. Her best friend there is a comic major. I’ve heard its only one of a few schools in the states that offers it.

redbug, co-founder of VT school used to teach at MCAD!

-Michelle Ollie is co-founder of The Center for Cartoon Studies. She taught marketing and design and was a Director at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She is faculty for New York Institute of Technology’s graduate business program, and prior was the Development Manager for Banta, a technology and market leader in printing. She received her MBA from the University of St. Thomas and is the Associate Editor of Mechademia, a new academic journal on anime, manga, and design, published by the University of Minnesota Press.

It seems White River Junction went thru some artsy transformation in recent years as happening all other small towns. depressed had-been factory or railroad town with empty big buildings turned into art place, theaters, hip stores and stuff. mmmmmm wanna check it out wagwagwagwag
ohhh that’s why smarty moved there? ohhhh what else would she spill???

Yes, it’s a small Vermont town but it’s close to New York and if you check out their roster of visiting artists, as well as the faculty, you’ll see that they have had a very impressive bunch of people come there to teach including Spiegelman (my hero), Lynda Barry and David Macauly and many others. Also the work is extremely high quality, I must say that they have some of the strongest works in this vein on their web site that I believe I’ve ever seen. It’s worth a look for anyone interested in sequential work. And no I have no connections there so this is not a paid advert or some such thing. Just think their work looks very strong and they get some really good people coming in to teach.

And for those really in the know I know that some might consider these names I’ve mentioned as “commercial” but check out all the names, it is quite interesting. Look under visiting artists.

Artind,

You already have an undergrad degree so if I’m reading you right then you are just looking for further art eduction that will lead to a job in the comic world. If so, then how about this:

Go here –> [Laguna College of Art and Design | Illustration](http://www.lagunacollege.edu/illustration.php) for illustration classes;

Or here –> [Communication Arts - Otis College of Art and Design](http://www.otis.edu/academics/communication_arts/index.html) for illustration classes;

And at the same time get an internship here –> [Internship Opportunities | Marvel.com](http://marvel.com/corporate/interns)

The Otis/Marvel commute would be about 15 minutes by car. Laguna/Marvel is much further, maybe 60 minutes each way.

I believe both schools have rolling admissions so it might still be possible to gain admission for a Sept start. Maybe start with Marvel to see if they have any internships available.

Best,
Wheaty

visitors like, James kochalka, VT native. wiki says “In March 2011 he was declared the cartoonist laureate of Vermont, serving a term of two years”

I am not crazy about his works but love those who were influenced by

are these your thing, OP?
or superheros, men in tights and cape?

I like the fact the CCS encourages kids to have liberal arts background. fate is calling.
say, kid survives UG, go do low residency MFA in cartooning, I make and sell bears in lovely Green Mountain State during gorgeous summer, R&B saved, smarty feeds us occasionally.

PS

or
you are looking into so-called manga? if so, it’s a whole different thing.
do you have those in where you live?
you didn’t tell us where you are.

Sounds good to me Bears

Hi, I’m not the OP but I read this thread with interest, because my daughter is very interested in manga and graphic novels in general (but mostly manga). I’m investigating sequential art programs and would love to know what I should think about or where to look for ones that specialize in manga as opposed to Marvel style art.

SVA is supposedly mecca of American manga ( so it was told, Japanese mom and half American kid of hers went to its openhouse)
However, it was not kind of manga the kid wanted to do, and students’ skill levels are all over the place.
The kid was aiming for Japanese art school and the tsunami and meltdown happened, trying to figure out what to do next.
Too bad you can not do study abroad there unless fluent in Japanese.
while I was digging Japanese wikipedia for my then fav artists and found that some of them became honorable manga professor of legit art schools.
All those school seriously now TEACH manga!!!
how things have changed…

Thanks for reply. I"m not sure if my dd would be looking to go to Japan for her studies, but she is going to start Japanese next year, so at least it’s somewhat feasible. Expenses are another thing altogether, though.

look at this!!
masters, ph D of manga!!!
http://www.kyoto-seika.ac.jp/eng/edu/graduate/manga/</a>
Seika is just about so-so school but seems pushing manga big time.
I can’t find tuition and fee posted but my guess is about 20-25K (80yen = 1dollar)/year.
could be cheaper since this school is not in Tokyo.
and it says welcomes international student with sholarship red carpet!!! for Manga!!!
I say, Japan’s SCAD?

Bears…
shhhh!!

I have to keep this quiet from manga girl. Manga boy is going to Japan for the rest of the summer but she has a new boy that has called her (he says she’s inspired him to get back into art???) and she wants to meet him at Barnes and Noble in Danbury. I swear the distances I have to go here are worse than in California. Driving her 45 minutes to Danbury mall? At least I have to go to the mall anyway, so I told her I’d take her for gluten free pizza at the Uno’s there and then she can hang out with this boy at Barnes and Noble. What is it/why is it that my kids are so weird they love to hang out at bookstores? I asked her if he likes manga too, and she said not so much. I’m sure she’s going to work on converting him.

I’ll have to drink my latte and keep in the background and try not to be too obvious about my spying. I think D1 wants to go shopping, maybe she’ll spy – of course she sticks out like a sore thumb with her black and blond hair and lip ring…

Nothing like moving right back into that role of chauffer/meter maid when I lose my job.

Gmom
can I copy paste ^that on “launch” thread?
they need to hear this drama! drama!!!
soooo poor manga boy had to be dragged back to could be super toxic land of political negligence.
none but only one mommy friend of mine would go visit this summer.
poor grandpas grandmas actually encouraged they should stay far far away for time being.
call them traitors but if you got growing small children, who can really blame them?

I don’t know how long it take to settle dust for good, but yeah
if she ever wants to go, Seika seems good place, for entrance exam is less crazy than other big name places and have connection to some nice US schools (like, Bard!?!?!) for exchange deal.
You do need Japanese because classes are done in Japanese, I don’t know how hard to pass proficiency exam. I bet I would fail. LOL

Oh sure, we can move it to launch thread. I’ll just do that now.
I guess she didn’t hit it off so well with the new boy, lol.

Well that’s understandable . . . he doesn’t like manga all that much!
