Urgent (Sort of) Probation Question

I received an email today from the Fin Aid office telling me that my Presidential Scholarship will be renewed for 2013-2014, but they have placed me on probation for I don't know what reason.

They said that you can be placed on probation for either a) not maintaining academic standing with the university or b) not being enrolled full time for both Fall and Spring Semesters.

The first one doesn't apply to me at all, because I got all A's/A-'s and one B in my classes. The thing is, my dad passed away in Thanksgiving and to adjust, I took 14 units instead of 16 or 18 during Spring because I needed to take a lighter course load to work and make money (I got a job at the library and also did research).

Is this why they have placed me probation? I don't understand why and it's kind of worrying me. I'm going to call the Fin Aid office first thing Monday morning as it is, but do I just explain this situation to them and then they'll take me off probation?

Sorry for freaking out, it's just angering me and they conveniently send it on a Saturday morning when I can't respond until Monday. Thanks.

Don’t freak out, really, no need. It sounds like it is the hours thing, since it is certainly not your grades. This is probably a standard letter that kicks out cause your account was flagged with the 14 credits. You will feel better when you talk to them, but it really isn’t anything to worry or panic about. Just ask them what else you need to do to get the probation status removed, and let them know the situation. They will be glad to help you. They aren’t looking to take away scholarships - especially yours - it sounds like you are doing great, and are incredibly responsible. Congrats on some great grades. Really sorry about your dad.

There are other posters that know the USC system better than I do, and perhaps they will provide more reassurance.

Messages you through DS. I have some information on your situation from the scholarship brochure given to us when you all received your scholarships. If you don’t complete 32 units in one academic year, you are reviewed to determine if you are going to be able to graduate in 8 semesters. Probation can last two semesters, during which time you must complete 16 units per semester or they can revoke your scholarship. Are you signed up for 16 units or more?

Definitely call on Monday, but it looks like it is just a formality. Sending hugs!

I had a sort of similar situation with my presidential scholarship, and you’ll be fine. Call them, handle it responsibly and quickly, and you’ll keep your scholarship :)

Hi thanku4flying - did it all get resolved? Hope so!
