Hi. I am applying for both UCLA and Berkeley. Because I am out of state, I am having slight confusions about what to label my courses as. My freshman and sophomore year, I took honors courses that my school offered, and my junior and senior year, I have been taking IB classes. On the app, I am labeling my IB courses as IB, but I do not know how to label my honors courses from freshman and sophomore year. Would they be considered "UC approved honors" even though I am out of state? Or would I label them as non-honors classes? If I labeled them as non-honors classes, would that not be unfair to me considering I took the challenging courses and they are not adding points to my GPA?

UC approved honors courses are listed at http://doorways.ucop.edu , which appears to have only public and private schools in California.

With ucbalumnus, I don’t think there are any schools listed out of state.

However, I found a pattern where honors courses that are most likely approved tend to be higher level courses. For example Honors Algebra 1 is not approved for my school, but Honors Precalculus is approved (thank goodness). Another example is Honors 10th Grade English not approved, and Honors American Lit (Junior Year) is approved for my school. Hoped that helped in anyway, but other than that, your college or guidance counselor should have more info as they are the ones who know which classes are approved in accordance to district standards (My counselors said something like that so just ask them!).

Good luck and hope you get into those great schools!

Most (almost all) honors courses taken in high school should not be labelled as honors. UCgpa counts honors and regular classes as the same. It may seem unfair to you, but everyone who took all honors courses has to label them as regular, so you’re not missing out.

There are no UC approved honors for out of state. From the UC web site:

There is no pre-approved course list for schools outside of California. Referring to the Doorways website (a database of UC-certified course lists in California schools) and/or the 15 college-preparatory course categories can provide guidance on the types of courses that have been UC-approved.
Honors courses are calculated differently. In calculating an out-of-state student’s GPA, UC will grant honors weight for AP or IB courses only, but not for school-designated honors courses. The weight is given to letter grades of A, B, or C.

I listed my classes as honors and I’m from out of state! D: is there still time to correct this?
Ugh I’m making so many mistakes on my applications I do not like this at all
