URGENT: UCLA sociology vs UC Berkeley Media Studies

Hi Guys! I’m struggling between UCLA and UC berkeley right now. I really don’t know which one i should attend. Can you guys please give me some suggestions about these two majors? It would be very helpful for me to make my final decision!

What do you want to do after college? Do you like the idea of living in Los Angeles or Berkeley/San Francisco more? Have you visited both campuses? Which is further from your place of residence? How far do you want to be from home? Which do you like more: sociology or media studies?

The answers to these questions should help you determine which campus to attend.

I’m wondering why you didn’t pick communications at UCLA?

I’m a Sociology major at UCLA. What do you want to know?

communications is an impacted major at ucla

@2016Candles can i ask what u planning on doing for ur career with sociology major?

You can ask, but I really don’t know… :))

Honestly I’m really just using it as a foundation for my graduate program. I want to get a masters in either urban planning or program administration. So sociology is a pretty decent foundation for both of those. UCLA offers a lot of opportunities to do research, has an excellent reputation, and opps for solid internships, so I’m hoping that a combo of that will get me into a top grad program.

@2016Candles i see i see. do you happen to know if its possible to switch my major to communications at UCLA as a transfer?

I would say 99% impossible. If you’re not admitted to Comm it’s a no go. I have a friend who tried and they all but laughed at her. There are several Soc and Comm classes that are cross-listed, so she took them thinking it would give her an edge when she tried to switch to communications. It didn’t work. It wasn’t even close to working. It wasn’t wasted effort, because she still need to take these classes for Sociology, but communications is way too popular, selective, and impacted for people to switch into.

@2016Candles do you know if its possible to do like a business related minor with sociology and perhaps that will get me into HR, PR or education related careers?

Minors are a little different. If a minor is offered, you can generally get it, if you have completed the coursework. Not all majors have an equivalent minor, so you’ll need to research the minors you’re interested in to find out if there is actually a minor offered, and what the specific course requirements are. You’ll need to look at the course requirements to see if you have the necessary prereqs. And you have to figure out if you can complete your major and minor courses and necessary prereqs within the appropriate number of quarters.

@2016Candles is it possible to do double major in sociology and comm at ucla?

If you were not accepted into Communications initially, you can’t add it, switch to it, double major, minor, etc. The only thing you can do is take Comm classes, but they won’t lead to anything other than additional knowledge.
