I have been admitted to UMiami for the fall and will be a computer info systems major looking to double in management science(operations research) and i was admitted to UMD for spring 2011. I will have to reapply to business program at UMD after 2 years with the chance of them not even accepting me into it. I know UMD is more highly ranked in the B-School department, but is it worth the risk? or is UMiami's business school comparable?
Thank you for your imput! I know I absolutly love business from my many years in DECA!!!!

Let me note that I am somewhat familiar with both schools. I was a law student at Miami and live in Maryland.

Also, I am biased in that I love University of Miami. The weather is MUCH better than Maryland, and they have more majors to choose from in my opinion. Moreover, classes are smaller and , reputation wise, they are similar.

However with all the above said, unless you get some kind of scholarship from Miami, I might pick Maryland because of the cost UNLESS your dad is wealthy. If money were no object then I would pick Miami. Thus, I would need to know what your costs will be net of any scholarship offers.

i am fortunate enough to be able to go to any school I want. my parents have always told me since i was little that all i have to do is work hard enough to get into the colleges and they will take care of expense. With that being said, I still dont know if Miami is worth the extra 10k per year even if i wont have to worry about financials. I know my parents just want me to be happy, but i would rather them use that extra money for something towards their lives or even towards my little brothers. I can tell that they are already extremely proud of me for getting into UMiami and UMD, so as of now that is good enough for me!

How is this your opinion? There either are, or aren’t more majors. Opinion has nothing to do with it.

Strange for a math and physics minor to have such a foolish misconception. Especially since you have a strong GPA…

What about his mom? Did you forget that women can be wealthy too? I thought you worked with a girl that cleared 7 figures?

Typo alert: I meant to say that the weather is much better in Miami and they seemingly have more majors ( although I havne’t really counted) to choose from in my opinion. Moreover, classes are smaller and , reputation wise, they are similar.

Also , this assumes that you didn’t get a great scholarship at Miami to almost equalize the costs. However, if costs were about the same, or even two or three thousand more per year at Miami, I might pick Miami. Why?

Weather

smaller classes

Some great majors that aren’t offered at Maryland: You really need to check out any possible major offerings at both schools.

State cutbacks to Maryland that has raised class size, reduced majors and reduced course offerings.

Location of Coral Gables is MUCH better than College Park.
