Im at UMD. Im trying to apply to be a Music Minor at the school of music for Piano. However, this year they decided to 'step up their game' and they made music minors audition with pieces just as hard as music majors, which I think is just complete bull.
Anyhow, the audition is in less than 4 months. I live on campus and I just found out the practice rooms with pianos in them at the school of Music are reserved for people who are already Music Majors. So how the heck am I supposed to practice at all??? Look on campus for an open piano? Who do I contact?
Did the school of music seriously not even think this through?

Ask the music department. They may allow you to use the practice rooms because of your upcoming audition.

Well I already emailed Music Admissions, and went to the school of music front office and asked. Would that count as the music department?

I suggest asking the dean of music, who’s probably the person who can best help you. The front office people probably don’t have that power. If you don’t get a response to e-mail, go in person. If turned down (which I doubt), ask for help finding a piano to practice on.

First of all, it makes complete sense to be held to the same standard as a music majors. It’s not that the people shouldn’t be as good, it’s that they aren’t as completely focused on it.
Second, there are plenty of classrooms in CSPAC with pianos.
Third, I doubt they’re all reserved 24/7
Fourth, Why isn’t this posted in the UMD section where more people can actually help you?
Five, Worse comes to worse, buy a keyboard. Not ideal, but you can have it in a dorm.

Actually, the question is probably best served in the music major forum.

A clerk or work study student at the desk may well not be in a position to answer your question or resolve this issue.

Music admissions may not be your best bet for access to a piano for practice purposes. The chair of the piano department, the assistant dean, then the dean. You are dealing with a level of bureaucracy here, so you need to be polite, yet persistent in getting the right answer from the right person. But I would first look at the music section of the undergrad handbook, where policies, procedures and other detail concerning the minor (length of lesson, and assignment (or choice) of instructor, potential additional costs/expenses, access to practice rooms and accessibility of ensembles).

While the audition rep may be the same as what they require of majors, realize you will most likely NOT be held to the same level of excellence that they would require of a music or performance major. The audition selection committee will be looking for technique, intonation, musicality as well as “teachability”.

If all else fails, try a house of worship close to campus. Talk to the music director. You might be able to arrange use of the piano in exchange for a gratis performance or two at a service.

Good luck with your audition.

ok Im not sure exactly what ur talking about ginab.
Theres this one building of music I know of, which I think is CSPAC.
There are lots of practice rooms with pianos in it that require swipe cards to get in (music majors only)
and there are a few classrooms with pianos in it. but there are classes throughout the day and some rooms require swipes too.
Im thinking of just jumping into a classroom between classes.
Also I emailed the assistant dean, waiting on a reply now (thats wat everyone i emailed pointed to)
