URGENT Waitlist Q

I was waitlisted by Stanford. If I accept their offer to continue to be on the waitlist and am offered a place in the class of '12 off their waitlist, can I decline the offer?

Why? I might fall in love with another school May 5 when they tell me of their decision.

Does if matter if I respond to their waitlist question now or two weeks from now? (in regards to my chances of getting off the waitlist)

Although I’m in no way an expert on Stanford, this is what I understand in general:

Yes, you can accept a position on the waitlist, and then turn it down later. However, I think they usually want a very quick answer if they offer you a place, so it would be a good idea to lay down for yourself definite circumstances for accepting/denying it.
I don’t think answering later will harm you, but I guess it depends on Stanford’s way of doing things. But there are international applicants who won’t have had time to get the mail and reply by then, so I doubt it would make a difference.

And May 5th? Isn’t that really late?

Good luck with whatever you choose! =]

Thanks. Well, May 5 is when they said they will tell us if we got off the waitlist, which makes sense b/c admitted students have to respond by May 1, so that gives them a few days to figure out how many more spaces they have.

Ohhh, okay. I thought it was just a regular notification. It can never hurt to reply to Stanford now and then write back and withdraw if you want.

Well, good luck anyway!
