From what i can tell from looking through online, it is some kind of business form??
my mom is a social worker and my dad is currently unemployed.
do i still have to send in a 1099 form??
thanks guys!

No. A 1099 is a type of form that reports certain types of potentially taxable income other than earned income. For instance, if your father was receiving unemployment compensation he should have received a 1099G showing his unemployment compensation for the year. If your parents (or you) had any money in interest earning bank accounts they should have received 1099-INT for each account. If they have stocks they would have received a 1099-div, reporting dividend income, for each account.

If they received any sort of income that is reported on a 1099 then, yes, you have to send it. They should have these forms filed with their tax information.

so basically your saying these 1099 forms should be automatically given to me with my parents tax income 2008 right? Or do i need to go download something and fill them out sort of deal? and if i dont think i need the 1099 form, do i just not send one in or do write a note or what?

Also with the IDOC,
do i need to send to collegeboard and schools w/ idoc or just collegeboard.

The 1099 is a form that is sent to the person who received the income (unemployment, interest, dividends, etc.), the same way a W-2 form is sent. It’s not something you fill out. You either get them or you don’t. Ask you parents if they received any.

You only send the forms to IDOC. IDOC then transmits the information to the schools. Not all schools subscribe, though, and in those cases you’d have to send the information to the colleges directly. If IDOC has a code number for the college, then IDOC will transmit the information to that college.

I don’t really understand what you mean by “by automatically given to me with my parents tax income” . Your parents (and you if applicable) should receive documentation relating to all their income for the year. This documentation is required by law to be sent to them so that they can use it to prepare their tax returns. For instance your mother works and has earned income - she should receive W2s showing that income. If your dad was receiving unemployment benefits he should get a 1099-G. if they received dividends they should receive 1099-DIVs.

These documents are used to help prepare their/your tax returns. Your parents should have them with their tax information. You or your parents don’t fill them out. The companies the income originated from (whether it is work income on W2s or other income on 1099s) fill them out and send them to whoever received the income (you or your parents). Then your parents use them to do their tax returns.

So I’m an applicant from the UK but a US permanent resident and I just noticed that 1099 forms are listed as a requirement for my IDOC. one problem - I’ve already sent my idoc WITHOUT these 1099s since I didn’t know what they were and if they were applicable to me. As such my parents don’t have 1099s but UK equivalents - would these be what they were looking for and if so what do I do? I mailed my packet last week and still collegeboard hasn’t received it - what do I do in light of this missing documentation? I can’t send it in separtely with my cover sheet can I? Help!

Some people are given W2 forms for income, some are given 1099s- it depends on the type of worker you are. You should have one or the other from your or your parent’s employer; you might not have 1099s.

If your parents work for company ABC & XYZ and you have a W2 from each of those companies, you are fine

My bank made a mistake and doubled my interest on the 1099 int form. I called them with all the information and they said they would fix it and send me another form. Its been more than a month. I haven’t sent in my IDOC yet because they need this form. Can I just send the other stuff in? Should I just write down the amount and talk to my financial aid advisor?
