As a pre-haas major, I was wondering what are the ideal subjects I should take in my first semester? Classes that will also enable to aid my transition to a new country and university. Thank you!!

Well what are you looking to complete in your first semester? My suggestion would be:

13-unit schedule if you’re worried about the transitioning process:

–> Math 16A (3 units)
→ Breadth/or another prereq Econ1 would be best since the professor teaching it now is pretty good
→ Breadth (4 units) or Foreign Language (5 units)
→ Remaining units: Find a seminar/decal you’re interested in.

I have taken a foreign language for 5 years in my country’s HS. And I have also gotten 680 and above in my SATs. Will I still need any R&C? Sorry for these trivial questions. This is all so new to me. Thank you for your help!

What are some examples of a decal btw?

don’t take Econ 1 your first semester. its not going to aid in your transition.

these are DeCals:
[DeCal : Courses](<a href=“My Dating Tests – What I learned to avoid”>My Dating Tests – What I learned to avoid)

here’s what will help you know whether ur R&C is filled:
[Office of Undergraduate Advising: Reading & Composition](Reading & Composition | L&S Advising)

If not Econ1, then what other classes would be doable which would satisfy a pre-req for haas? :)

Well… have you completed your R&C? If not, do that.

Take math 16a, breadth, R&C, decals/seminars.

I have not completed my R&C as the only qualification I have are my SATs’ Writing and Reading since my school does not offer APs. What are some good breadth and R&C courses to take?

Find one that interests you. However, if you’re not that strong with writing, these courses tend to be the easy ‘R&C’ classes. Although they’re easier than your normal R&C class, do take them serious. Difficulty varies from GSIs to GSIs. So: German R5A, Slavic R5A, Scandinavian R5A.

Anyways… You need to do some schedule research on your own. It seems like you’re a bit clueless about which classes to take.

You will probably take about 16 courses in your first 4 semesters. There are 7 prerequisites to the business major, assuming that you have foreign language fulfilled already:

R&C A and R&C B

Math 16A and 16B or Math 1A and 1B or Math 53 or Math 54 (weird rules on AP/IB/A-level credit)

Economics 1

Business Administration 10

Statistics 20 or 21

You will probably take 2 of them in most of your first 4 semesters. The rest of your schedule would be filled with breadth courses and courses for other possible majors that you are interested in.

ucbalumnus: thank you so much. i am now jotting down helpful information in preparing myself for a whole new academic system.

calicious: you are right, i am kind of clueless. i’ve just only made a distinction between r&c and breadth. haha. i’m getting there though. thanks for your input on the easier R&C classes. however, i do not hold any interests in them so i would probably choose something else. is philosophy notoriously difficult?

are decals necessary or is it simply out of interest and does not count towards your GPA?

Decals are simply out of interest and do not count towards your GPA. They’re low unit P/NP classes that are taught by students. The only relevant Decal for pre-Haas kids may be the Intro to Wall Street decal. Could be of interest to you if you have spare time.

Upper division philosophy can get difficult quickly.
Lower division philosophy, especially that intro to logic class, is considered cake walk (with the right teacher).

Decals are mainly there to fill in your 13-unit requirement. You can also take them out of interest. They are P/NP so it doesn’t affect your GPA.

crowslayer91: thank you. i can’t take philosophy though. the class is full on telebears. how is it that all the classes are full when telebears are only available for me just an hour ago. does classes really fill up so fast in an hour. this is ridiculous. now i am stuck with subjects i don’t want to take. this is making me rethink my decision to come to cal. ugh.

calicious: i have 3 units now. 9 including waitlists. so if i take a 4 unit course, i won’t need a decal, right? if i take a 3 unit course, a decal is a must then?

-

by the way, i entered my telebears half an hour before appointment time with the AC but can still enroll for classes. another friend of mine enrolled 3 hours before appointment time with her AC and could still enroll. So… what was the appointment time for since it seems like we can enter telebears whenever anyway.

Why is there this notion that Economics 1 is a very difficult course? Seems like students who did basic stuff like go to class and pay attention, read the book, consult with instructors during their office hours if they need additional help, and do the assignments should do fine, and it does not have time consuming labs or anything like that.

I’d probably stick with one pre-req in your first semester along a few breadth and/or a DeCal to reach the 13-unit minimum. I’d be wary of the tendency to try to overdo it in your first semester in terms of how many pre-reqs you take, because they are harder (after the curves, which are made more challenging due to Haas students, especially in UGBA, Stats and, to some degree, Econ and Math, are taken into consideration).

I’d take classes alongside your pre-reqs that are interesting to you, apply toward a breadth requirement, and/or along the lines of departments in which you may want to major/minor.

Also, a quick note, my impression has been that Econ 1 with Olney is generally regarded as challenging because of the way she teaches it, but she is also widely regarded as the best Econ 1 professor we have.

Yup if you have 13 units with your existing schedule then there is no need to look for a seminar/decal. It’s only necessary if don’t have enough units (say 1-2 remaining)
