Urgent: Why BME

My friend is applying for BME early, the deadline is in a day, and he has absolutely no clue what to write for his why BME. He is utterly freaking out. I want to stop the whining: if anyone who got in or is applying could throw out some ideas, that would be fantastic.

Tell him that he doesn’t deserve to apply BME if he doesn’t know why he’s applying. John Hopkins BME process is very selective. The admissions officers will be able to see through any half hearted attempts on this essay.

However, as I’m applying BME early too, I wouldn’t mind if he does apply. Good to even out the competition, lol.

let me clarify this a little, in his words. (screen names have been censored to protect the privacy of those involved)

john doe (1:18:53 AM): The guy was like “He doesn’t deserve to apply to BME if he doesn’t know why”
john doe (1:18:59 AM): It’s not that I don’t know why
john doe (1:19:12 AM): It’s that I don’t know how to write it without sounding trite
john doe (1:19:20 AM): “I want to help people!”
john doe (1:19:24 AM): Whoop dee fing doo
john doe (1:19:31 AM): “I want to be a doctor”
john doe (1:19:35 AM): So does every other Jew
john doe (1:19:43 AM): “Engineers are cool”
john doe (1:19:50 AM): What planet are you from?
john doe (1:19:55 AM): see my conundrum?

Don’t go into BME for premed…

It seems like he wants to do it because he thinks it will get him into med school. And it seems like he wants to be a doctor for the money. The BME adcoms are pretty good and they’ll see right through it.

If he doesn’t have a reason, he doesn’t have a chance. If he has a reason but is afraid to right it, still better than nothing.

Why BME essay?? huh??? u mean what major essay right… dont ****in scare people…

BME falls at the intersection of medicine and engineering and you need to show you have a reason for wanting to pursue a degree in this interdisciplinary field. BME is not a pre-med route (though many BME’s go to med school)

“I want to help people!”: BME isn’t necessarily going to help people. You can be a doctor, lawyer, nurse, social worker, etc etc, ANYTHING will allow you to help people. In fact, you don’t even have to go to college to help people- just join the army. So yes, that is a lame reason-especially if he has no extracurriculars to support it.

“I want to be a doctor”: Doing BME at Hopkins just because you think it’ll get you into med school because “oh look at me, I graduated from a top university with one of its top programs on my diploma!” will NOT help. You can be ANY major in order to get to med school. So that reason is again, lame.

“Engineers are cool”: very very immature reason

So I agree, he does have a problem. It’s not that he doesn’t “deserve” to be BME, but if I were an admin, I’d save that spot for someone with more realistic reasons.

haha, JHU cc’ers are about as friendly as STDs

I agree with nblazer201
Just because someone is having difficulty you shouldn’t put them down like that…the whole point of this website is for advice…

and btw I’m applying for BME, but I do plan to go to med school because I love engineering but moreover I want to go into medicine… JHU doesn’t have pre-med, but just look>>they have one of the best med schools!

I don’t think anyone’s trying to be mean, just realistic. As a BME, I’ve seen quite a few people come into the program for the wrong reasons and end up switching majors. BME is a very unique interdisciplinary major and you need to have some idea of what it is to make sure it’s the right choice to you. You shouldn’t apply to BME just because it’s the only ‘restricted’ major. It’s not that you need to know the details of the program or exactly what you need to study, but you need to realize that BME is a mix of engineering and medicine, and that’s it not purely one or the other. If you’re only interest is to go to med school and you hate math, then it’s probably not the right route for you, but if you realize that mixing medicine and engineering sounds cool/interesting/fun, then do consider the BME program

Why do you want to be a biomedical engineer? Why did you choose Hopkins instead of Rice? (I only ask that because you’re from Houston).

We went to a presentation on Hopkins and really liked it. A friend of ours is interested in swimming competitively there, and wants to do premed. Encouraging him to apply.
