Will colleges accept the deposit submitted by someone else on my behalf? I cannot do the bank transfer thing so I asked a friend currently in the US to pay the money, is this acceptable? And can he pay the deposit under my name or will the bank require that it’s under his name?
The deposit goes to the school, correct? Why would they not accept payment?
Make sure your acquaintance has your name as submitted to the school and whatever student ID number they assigned to you.
I mean, how will the college know this deposit is for me? Is my acquaintance allowed to do the transfer under my name? Or does it have to be through an existing account and will be under the name of the account owner?
I assume they would write a check to the school. Put your name and student or portal if on the memo line. A college may not take a “transfer” (eg, ACH payment). If your deposit is due May 1, they should be able to mail a check post-marked May 1 (but I’d call admissions and tell them it is coming).
The college asked for a bank transfer
You need to discuss this with the college. Let them explain.
Bank transfers are annotated with some identifying info. Yours would state your name and identifying info the college requires (same as a check would.) Depending on where it’s coming from, you need proper inter bank IDs for routing.
They seem to want a transfer to ensure these are covered funds. Not unusual for international payments. But your friend in the US may have several common options for US to US money transfers. (And possibly different routing numbers.)
You’ve got to talk to the college.
Talk to the college, as lookingforward said. This type of arrangement actually isn’t all that uncommon. Columbia U, for example, specifically talks about how to do this on their billing page, which students can see. So contact the college and ask how best to do this.
Double check that it is fact a deposit, and not a reservation fee. A lot of colleges do not credit your deposit on your bill.
