I posted this on the Harvard thread, but since I submitted the Common app. to JHU, I might as well as ask here again. And I'm hopin AdmissionsDaniel could shed some light on this:

Ok, my common app essay is 660 words, and I emailed the Harvard admin on the 27th asking if that is alright. I never got a reply in time, so I just submitted it online. Then, I got a reply yesterday (Jan. 3rd) saying it's ok, but that it might be a good idea to mail it since it might get cut off online. Well, what the **** AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? ED acceptees, anyone with a 650+ essay?

Not sure how we can help you on the Hopkins thread when your question relates to Harvard. Every school has different policies regarding word counts for essays.

If your question is about your essay getting cut off and not about word counts, did you check the preview screen before submitting it. I know the online common application has a character maximum (6000) but I have no idea what that equals in words. The preview system is so you can make sure you are submitting everything correctly.

my common app essay was really long. it was a little bit over 1000 words, even though the direction said to keep it around 500 words....but when i previewed the essay, my essay didn't get cut off. Everything was all there, because they let you allow a maximum of 6000 characters.

So do not worry at all. your 660 word essay will all be there.

sorry admissionsdaniel, i was asking here because i sent my common app to JHU as well, and was wonderin what was the case for you guys. i checked the preview and it seemed fine, so i hope all goes well.
