sorry, i'm new to the uva section of cc, so i hope i'm not asking a redundant quesetion, but i recently received an email saying that i should send my app in soon as they have already started reviewing apps.... anyone know what this means? is this implying that it's first come first serve even though decisions aren't mailed out on a rolling basis?

Application decisions aren't rolling, so they don't start to read it or make a decision on it until the deadline. However, it is better to start getting things in earlier rather than waiting until the last minute, so that if you're missing anything, you're not scrambling to get it in. That, and servers can be extremely slow on the day of and day before, so it can be less of a hassle if you don't wait till the last minute.
So, is it better to submit early? Maybe. I would get in grades/SATs/recs as soon as possible just so if something gets lost in the mail, you're not screwed. However, as far as the online part, I wouldn't sweat turning it in more than a day or so out if you want to be on the safe side.

Actually, according to the following they have begun to read the applications.

Notes from Peabody II: The UVA Application Process

According to this, as of yesterday approximately 3000 applications were either being processed or in the process of being read.
I think they are just asking people to apply early to avoid a last minute onslaught.

i saw that actually as well. i doubt they're making firm decisions right now, because accordingly to earlier posts by Dean J, they do an initial read, make notes, then take it to a committee where they make a final decision. Seeming she didn't mention that this time, I doubt they're making decisions.

Only rare cases go to committee.

We have a few different phases that we go through, but applications are getting final decisions right now if the decision is clear to us. In February, we review our numbers and go back through waitlisted applications to fill in the gaps (for example, we'll realize that we need x number of in-state nurses or x number of out of state engineers).

I'd say that the advantage to getting documents in now is that they'll be processed more quickly and there's less chance of mail being misdirected because the amount of mail we're getting right now is low compared to what we'll get a month from now.

Dean J-

Does the same mode of thinking apply to transfers as well? (Applying earlier than the Mar. 1st deadline)

Shoebox- I know you answered this for me (thanks), I just wanted to make sure there weren't any changes
