URich chances??

Hi! Being the paranoid incoming senior that I am, I have done way too much research about college. This being said I went to my chances dot net and created a profile. It says I have an 85.5% chance of getting into University of Richmond. Either my guidance counselor is extremely pessimistic or this website is mocking me. What do you think?

Hi AHN…First, my standard disclaimer: I hate “chancing”. I don’t like a person having their hopes dashed or expectations set unrealistically high by people who are not intimate with the process at a particular institution.

That said…************** determines their “odds” by what members enter as their stats and admission decision. I am reasonably certain that there is some really bad data on the UR section of that site.

I think your grades , courses and ECs give you a reasonable shot. I would try to bring your ACT up. Are you planning on taking SAT? I think UR really looks for diversity. Focus on your essay. Everything else is just numbers but your essay will sell you. Think of it as your job interview. It is your best opportunity to show Admissions why they want you on campus. BTW - a personal interview on campus is not real meaningful. Have you been to the school? Compare yourself to the admissions stats from the UR website. The Class of '13 is posted now. I think '14 will be there soon.

My daughter will be starting her Freshman year there in August and is very excited. We love everything about UR. If it becomes your clear #1 choice, consider pros and cons of Early Decision.

Good luckto you!! Let us know how things progress.

Thank you so much for the chance. I have multiple ideas for the essay, its just putting them into words is whats holding me back haha. I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to that. I’m retaking the ACT and hoping to get up to a 29. I’ve taken the SAT but my math score was so much lower than it was for the ACT that I don’t even like talking about it.

Funny enough I just made my campus appointment this morning. I didn’t set up a campus interview but I did schedule an information session and a campus tour. I’m really looking forward to it.

The only thing holding me back from ED is that I will need Financial Aid. I know Richmond says that they give 100% of demonstrated need, but I have a brother in college and a sister who is going to an expensive private school. The recession has not been kind.

Thank you so much for chancing me! And good luck to your daughter!

Richmond will meet 100% of demonstrated need. Need = Cost of Attendance - Expected Family Contribution. If you have a brother in college it will reduce your family contribution for both of you. The sister in the private school won’t help you. If you apply ED and are accepted, you will get an estimated financial aid package. I believe that if the package is not sufficient you can retract your admission. That may be something you want to bring up during the information session.

The interview can be good and it certainly is worthwhile if you would like some one on one discussion with a student. It just doesn’t weigh into the admission process.

Get your guidance counsellor or a teacher to review your essay but make sure you keep it YOUR essay.

I will definitely consider applying ED. I know that if my parents can’t pay the difference, I will have to pay through savings and taking out loans. Which I’m fine with doing if it means that I can go where I want to.

At my school we have an entire week of English classes dedicated to review our essays with the counselors, peer editing, and the English teachers. Yay for college prep schools! hahaha. Thank you so much for your help!

I was nervous about applying ED for the same financial reasons, but Richmond did in fact provide me with a financial package that totally met my need (there were some student loans included, which is cool.) It was such a relief! Obviously every year may present a different financial outlook, however I feel confident that my college expenses won’t exceed what my family and me can afford. A definite plus for choosing Richmond! Good luck. :)

Thank you! I really appreciate all the help.

This really makes me want to apply ed also, because I have a sister that will be a senior if I enroll in 2011. Even though we are both only in school at the same time for one year, my financial aid would be really good freshman year. If you and your brother will be in school at the same time, I would definately consider ed if Richmond is your first choice.

I just got back from a trip to College of Charleston, Wake Forest, and University of Richmond and absolutely loved Wake and Richmond. I will most likely apply ED at Richmond!!!

Good luck!

AHN1245, depending on the quality of your high school, you seem to have a decent chance. If many graduates go on to Ivies and other good schools you’re in better shape grade-wise.

PAVenturer, for someone whose daughter hasn’t spent a semester there, you say a lot about Richmond financial aid without a solid background. I’m going into my senior year there and this is only the second year I’ve gotten any financial aid. Like most colleges, Richmond expects your family to use all savings as well as money put aside for retirement. Furthermore, they boast that the average aid package is something ridiculous like $35,000 but that has not been my experience. Much of what I’m offered is unsubsidized loans, meaning the interest must be paid back immediately. I think the total aid for the two years is less than half of Richmond’s “average” package.

lauren, while admittedly we have not been associated with UR very long, I do know precisely what our financial aid package is and how it is determined. Yes some of it is loans. Most of it is not.

I got a 3 on APUSH and a 4 on AP Lang. Not as great on APUSH as I would have liked but I think thats pretty good for not taking the classes. Don’t know if that makes any difference.

AHN–

For the APs – APUSH and Lang – I think you have the option to self report on your application, which you can choose to do or not. You could have the grades sent but that seems like a waste of money as they really shouldn’t mean much until you are admitted. Don’t get me wrong, self-studying is great, but it’s not the same as taking the class. The real use of AP scores is credit by exam, which can let you bypass some gen ed requirements and lower level classes.

You can see Richmond’s current policy here >> [Credit by Exam - Policies - Registrar’s Office - University of Richmond](http://registrar.richmond.edu/services/policies/exam-credit_2010policy.html)

The 3 on APUSH and 4 on AP Lang won’t get you credit at UR at the moment, though that could change.
