URM and deadline question

If I am part pacific islander, is that even a URM at Harvard? does Harvard ask you to verify if you check off Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander? I don't know anyway to verify, since there are no tribes.

Well, I do suppose that you do not have to list your race; it is purely optional.

Pacific Islander seems VERY URM to me - particularly if you were from Papua New Guinea, anywhere around Tuvalu etc. I know alot of universities are trying to give kids from around there a leg up. :)

Really, I always thought pacific islanders were lumped in with the rest of the asian team = D

Really? I’m not a Pacific Islander - but I live in the Asia Pacific region, and have volunteered in some of the Pacific islands,

They are not “asian” in the highly-qualified-wealthy-well-resourced way at all.

I’m no anthropologist, but they certainly bear close to zero resemblance to the south east asians that I know.

Many are villagers living hand to mouth, most of the islands are extremely poverty stricken and primitive, there is generally little development, amenities are extremely basic. Also, there are very few tertiary education opportunities in the Pacific Islands - another reason why overseas universities are keen to consider their circumstances.

I think that colleges would be cognizant of the lives of Pacific Islanders, and look at their cases with a particular interest.

Only a small part of my family (maybe 1/8? 1/16? I forgot.) comes from the southeast Asia (indonesian) and pacific island (polynesia) region. I live in America though and am mostly East asian. I’m not even sure I can write it… advice?

how bout indigenous kids from Borneo??? are they considered URM? coz i am one. :)

Generally speaking, neither are Filipino people, but they are lumped in with the rest of Asia :P

To my knowledge, Pacific Islanders are not considered URMs by Harvard College. African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Hmong (sometimes), Native Americans, and Puerto Ricans are the main URM categories. Some schools may designate other ethnicities as such.

I’m a Pacific Islander and I got recruitment emails from Harvard so i think it still counts.

If you’re not a perm resident or US citizen, you’re under the larger “int’l” umbrella, and not URM
