The URM status and SAT scores help a lot, but the GPA and class rank definitely hurt your chances. Vanderbilt is probably a reach for you, but you will have a significantly better chance if you apply ED (only do that if Vandy is your top choice and you would go there without any regrets). I would say you will have a difficult time getting in regular decision, but a pretty good shot if you go for ED.

make sure you show interest in vandy. come up for a PreVU weekend, meet your admissions counselor for your area... take a tour, etc. i'd say you stand a decent shot but that it is probably a reach. dont be discouraged by that though because you never know what the adcom is going to think about you.

both are on the spot

nice that you enjoyed the book maybe write about it as your essay

This is just my humble opinion, but I think your extracurriculars and awards are impressive and, along with your high scores and URM status, will offset the borderline GPA. I think as long as you work to continue to bring up your grades, get good recs, and write strong essays, you have an excellent chance. :)

what school are you looking at? A&S, Blair, Peabody, Eng?
it makes a difference.

that being said, based on the recent admit articles in the VU magazine's last issue (i think that is it IIRC):

i'd say you have a very very good chance for admission.

your SATs, ecs, aps and essays will overcompensate for the gpa disconnect. The URM status plays into Vandy's need to diversify and attract students that would normally not consider them.

go for it. ask for those great recs from your favorite teachers and keep studying hard in your senior year--if you can improve your final year gpa while others trash via the senior slump it is definitely to your advantage.
