Hello I am a sophomore African-American male from a commendable public high school in Washington State.

Current GPA: 3.85 UW
PSAT: 193
SAT II's: Took Chem and US History June 4th and waiting for scores

AP's: Took AP World History Freshman Year, AP Chemistry AP Statistics AP English Language and AP United States History Sophomore Year

Plan to APPLY with 9 AP credits (after junior year is complete), and graduate with 11-13

EC's:
President of Film Club (11) -- we have just started this so thats why i am putting it down for junior year
DECA (10) -- 1st Place at Regionals for Sports & Entertainment Marketing
Debate (10) -- Debated Novice and moved into JV this year will be serving as Treasurer next year
Bellevue Youth Council Member (9,10)
Safe Rides Program Executive Committe + Design Team Member (9,10)
Community Leadership Awards Speaker (9)
Bellevue Youth Involvement Conference Speaker + Exec. Committee Member (9)

As much as I despise people who do this on these threads...ill tell you of what i PLAN on doing next year:
-JV Tennis
-Running the film club as we already have 2 shorts (one this summer) and a feature film in the works as well as plan on doing a weekly television show in conjunction with members of a comedy show that currently runs at our school
- Leadership positions in both DECA and Debate (Debates is secured but i am still seeking DECAs)
- Attending the LEAD Institute
- Raising my SAT Scores to 2200 range and getting 700+ on three SAT II's
- Speaking at CLA 2006 and Bellevues Youth Involvement Conference 2006

Okay...so...what are my chances at:

Stanford EA
USC Film
NYU Film
Yale
Columbia
Princeton
Northwestern
University of Washington

I recognize that a large majority of these are REACHES...but im just getting into the college admissions process and want to know where i stand among a range of universities

P.S. im not sure if i want to attend film school for undergraduate or graduate work and i want to know if anyone knows of any LAC's that have film studies programs as if i choose to do graduate work in film i will do my undergraduate work with a major in economics and a minor in film studies (i am seeking to become a Hollywood producer and, even more so, owning my own studio)

Bellevue high and my brother is harvard 09 so its a def possibility (even though he is 1000 times brighter than i)...I would say stanford is my top choice simply because of location (dreamworks/pdi animation has a location in n. cali and i would love to intern there + the film capital of the world is but a few hours away), i love the sun, and some great directors and producers have come out of stanford (namely Alexander Payne and Jay Roach).

Now if i were to do undergrad film work I would say USC, although NYU is considered to be a great school as well, simply because of the proximity to Hollywood and the HUGE amount of industry leaders that have come out of its program.

I think its all dependent upon whether I want to solely produce or direct and produce. I'm just keeping my options open for now because I am a sophomore but I would say that I will probably end up applying to Harvard but, because I am not entering an East Coast oriented profession, I would have to say California would be the best location for my studies.

i just wanted to tell you that you sound like an incredible over-achiever. i'm sure you'll have a great chance of getting into wherever you decide to apply.

i'm impressed you've taken so many APs by soph. yr, esp. difficult ones (like chem). as for anyone, the Ivies (and NU, USC) are kind of a crap shoot, but i'd say you have a reasonable shot. i think you have a good chance at NYU & U of WA.

haha yoooo tell samson i said whats up. He is a bright guy but from the looks of it you dont look too far behind :). Get that 2200+ and maintain you GPA and you should have no problem getting into Stanford.
Best of Luck,
Haitham Said

I don't know the area, but I hear a lot about Bellevue so I'm guessing that's a pretty good school in what I suspect to be a fairly affluent area... also, your family (and yourself!) seem to be very accomplished, especially if your brother did so well (seeing it is how I can't comment on the rest of your family)... But I was wondering if that would, umm... lessen the amount of impact of the OP's URM status... It's exponentially more difficult to be an African-American from a disadvantaged background than a middle-class one, so I was wondering if colleges put that into consideration. I hope someone answers this, it'd be interesting to hear your input.

^^ Colleges should, but dont take that into account. At the end of the day, there are so few URM applicants that colleges take whichever ones they can (often middle class/ lower middle class) and fight over them!

ive been thinking and i was looking at whartons management program and have decided that this is probably a better place for me if i can couple it with a few film studies classes at upenn (ive slowly been leaning towards a more corporate career such as a studio exec). So...the big question...do i have a chance at wharton?

Oh here are some new stats btw:
SAT II US History: 750, Chemistry: 680 (blehh...ill take 2 more next year probably biology and math IIC)

AP Scores:
AP World History - 5
AP Chemistry - 4
AP Statistics - 5
AP US History - 5
AP Language - 4

Yeah what the hell? Everything except maybe his ECs are below average. Being african american doesn't guarantee a spot at an Ivy. He has a decent shot at all the schools he's listed, but there's no way he has a 75% chance at harvard, yale, or princeton.

i really really really really really want to go to wharton now because i just found out they have a management concentration thats actually quite popular (i thought they only had finance-oriented programs). So do u think i have a chance there? ED maybe?
