Hey guys. I was just wondering if being an underrepresented minority would be considered a hook (I'm African). I'm not trying to spark any negative conversations. I am just curious because I can't think of any "good" hooks. I have decent grades/test scores & good EC's.

Also, what are examples of good hooks? Thank you in advice for your input.

See the first few posts of the Race FAQ sticky thread for a definition of who is considered AA for college admissions purposes.

Can you elaborate a little? I was born in America but my parents were born in Africa if that helps. I couldn’t find the thread you were talking about.

Okay so yes being black/African-American makes me a URM; I already knew that. My question however, is if it’s considered a “hook” & what are examples of hooks.

Use the Search function on this forum for ‘hook’, you will find many threads because this is a FAQ. Also see the AA Students forum under Specialty Topics under this forum.

Hooks are attributes that can give an applicant a boost in the process outside of transcript and tests. They can help a candidate among other equally well qualified applicants, but generally don’t move someone from the deny pile to the admit pile. They aren’t generally attributes over which you have much control. Hooks may vary from school to school. For example, legacy is a significant factor at some schools and not at others. Ethnicity, geography, and talent (recruited athletes) are other examples.

Thank you entomom & niceday
