URM, need quick help with my list of colleges! (decent SAT score)

I have a 1970 on my SAT
Breakdown: 600/680/690

I need to fix up a good list of colleges to apply to, I want a good list of ivy's or top schools I can get into (my top choices are Cornell, NYU and Northeastern) and I would appreciate it greatly if any of you can help me change/add to it to improve it.

I also want safeties because it seems as all I have are reaches :/

My list of colleges is as follows:

Cornell
Emory
NYU
Northeastern
Georgia Institute of Tech
Harvard(I know.)
Johns Hopkins
Purdue
Princeton
UCLA/UCB (already applied)
University of Chicago
University of Illinois at Chicago
University of Michigan

Is this a good list? Do I need more safeties? Can I add more prestigious schools? What schools do you guys advise me to add? Are there chances for me at some of the big top schools?

P.S. I got really good ECs and essays

I also have another question if you guys don’t mind:

I’ll be taking a math and science subject test in January, do all these schools accept the January ones? If not, which ivy’s or top schools should I apply to that accept the January subject tests?

Can your family afford all of those schools, or will you need aid?

I can afford all of them.

Anyone?

What is your GPA? Based on your SAT, which is not enough to really make a judgement, you definitely need more match and safety schools. SAT wise only:

Cornell-High reach
Emory- reach to high reach
NYU-reach to high reach
Northeastern?
Georgia Institute of Tech?
Harvard(I know.) High reach
Johns Hopkins High reach
Purdue possible match
Princeton High reach
UCLA/UCB (already applied)-High reach
University of Chicago- high reach
University of Illinois at Chicago- reach
University of Michig- high reach

What is your intended major? What is your GPA (UW/W). It would help to know what you’re interested in before making reccos, but you definitely need to add some more realistic options.

@werekall123‌

Are you first generation? What kinds of classes have you taken? Have you challenged yourself? ECs? You will have to have a stellar app even though you are URM.

I just looked at your OP, you have enough prestigious schools as it is. The clock is ticking!

@Osserpusser‌
@NewhavenCTmom

Thank you so much for your responses!

Which prestigious schools should I remove then? Which matches should I add? I have no clue.

I am not first generation and I’m not living in the U.S. but I have taken part in the hardest classes available at my school (APs and Honors) and I challenged myself as possible with the resources at hand.

GPA: 3.87 UW and W is 4.19

I’m very interested in pursuing a career in engineering.

@GA2012MOM I can afford all of them.

I have added UCONN, Rochester Institute of Technology to my list. Oh and I forgot to mention, I applied to UCSD, UCI as well.

What else do you guys recommend?

For a match schools, I’m looking for a decent well-known school that offers a great engineering program. (Namingly, computer science or computer engineering)

You said you’re not living in the U.S. Does that mean you’re an international student? If so, what country?

It is rather late to be making a list of schools. For safeties, consider the following lists.

See http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/</a> for potential low cost safeties.

See <a href=“Updated list of schools with auto-admit (guaranteed admission) criteria - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1562918-updated-list-of-schools-with-auto-admit-guaranteed-admission-criteria-p1.html</a> for potential admission safeties if you can afford anything.

The Engineering Departments at Ivy universities are not considered to be superior to their counterparts at the leading public universities (and some privates like Northwestern and Renssalaer). That being said, Cornell, U Pennsylvania and Princeton are considered to have very good to excellent engineering programs, but not superior to places like Minnesota, California-Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech or Texas-Austin.

UCSD AND UCI may be a low match because you are International/Full Pay only.That is going to be a HUGE hook for you, especially at state schools.

Not sure who takes January testing or not from your original list, but I do know you’ll need to get your math score up quite a bit for engineering so it’s best to take it. Is it possible you could enter undeclared and then apply to engineering? However, with the SATs and GPA you have, your list is a bit too ambitious for general admission at most anyway. Please let us know what you end up doing-best of luck!

Not sure about their deadlines, some of which may have passed, but here are some schools with engineering programs that would better match your stats. JUST PICK A FEW - I’m not saying to apply to all (-:

Purdue, Texas A&M, URI, UNH, Roger Williams, UMass Lowell, Western New England, Marquette, James Madison, Virginia Tech, University of Cincinnati (co-op), Northeastern (co-op), Western New England University, UNC-Charlotte, Clemson University, NC State, RPI, Temple, Utah, Penn State - University Park, University of Delaware, Kettering, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Florida, Arizona State, Ohio State, Iowa State, Rutgers, University of Pittsburgh, Cal Poly SLO (admin passed).

And, again, NOT KNOWING MUCH ABOUT YOU, I’d remove Harvard and Princeton for sure. Maybe Michigan if you’re only going for COE.

@LakeWashington‌
@Osserpusser‌

Thank you so much! This is incredibly helpful, you have no idea.

Have you considered UA? I believe they give good merit aid for certain scores. I can’t speak to what they are but it may be worth considering. I think their engineering program is solid. I know others can agree or correct me if I’m wring.

If you are international, you would not be considered URM unless you are from an African country or lower socioeconomic countries like some in South America . URM’s are typically: Mexican American, Native American, African-American, Pacific Islander, Alaskan Native. Many schools don’t use affirmative action and it doesn’t do a whole lot for your application.
Based on your SAT only and not seeing a GPA, I would say most of your original list is a big reach.
Aplle to Midwest and southern schools.

Sorry just saw GPA, still reaches with that SAT score.

I would say that the public universities on his list would definitely want the OOS (International) $$. However, OP can’t apply to Texas A&M or UT Austin anymore if he’s already a senior.
If your plan happens NOT to work out, take a gap year.

You guys are great, thanks to all of you.

I’ll be sure to notify you all individually when college admission results come out.
