URM, or underrepresented states?

I noticed that many threads have mentioned that states like Minnesota, Alaska, and North Dakota are given a little more slack during the admissions process-- almost like they're an underrepresented minority.

How true is this?

bump

It’s a point of interest – but if you’re under-qualified or otherwise not unique, you will get rejected. BTW: MN isn’t under represented.

The two guys I know from South Dakota who got into the Ivies (one to Yale, the other to Harvard) were both math “geniuses” - took part in international math competitions, etc. Being from South Dakota may have given them a smidgen of an advantage, but neither exactly required any extra slack…

Hate to thread jack but is Oklahoma under represented?
