Hey!
This is the ultimate college admissions support/discussion thread for under represented minorities. Where are you guys applying? What do you like to do for fun? Your intended major? How would you describe yourself (not just racially but open ended)? Me?

University of Chicago, Emory,Yale, Princeton, Penn, Boston College, Columbia, UGA, GA State, American, Georgetown, George Washington

I love reading historical fiction and African American fiction, watching Grey's Anatomy (though I am upset that Dr. Burke [Isiah Washington] won't be on; he was one of my favorite characters) and America's Next Top Model, and listening to music (mostly pop and alternative rock; love Three Days Grace and The Killers)

History. I love learning about cultures and ideas of the past

I am a black female who moved to the U.S. from Nigeria at the age of five who is slightly stressed out about college admissions and who loves to eat and exercise.

Note: I started a thread similar to this like two weeks ago that grew very controversial. There are Indian and Asian Threads right now on CC, so I don't see anything wrong with a URM thread. If you do not like the idea of this thread. Simply don't post here. And please no AA debates either.
Thanks guys!

Well, since no one else is replying... I'm na African American female from Jersey. I really like listening to music especially The Beatles as one can tell from my username =) I also like soul music and other classic rock. I'm a very kind of...interesting person no one really gets me, I don't even get me lol.

I like to read and study a lot and I'm really into academics. I'm also really into student council, I'm president this year and it takes up A LOT of my time. I'm also pretty politically active and I really love history and politics. I probably want to study political science or american studies or government or philosophy lol. I know eventually I want to study constitutional law, or something in that arena. I'm also a trivia buff (history and pop culture mostly) and I'm captain of the quiz bowl team <3.

I like to watch tv, I love dateline and 20/20, the soup and best week ever, top chef, seinfield, scrubs, and law and order. I love classic movies like the godfather, gone with the wind, citizen kane, singin in the rain, annie hall and to kill a mockingbird. I also like stand up comedy especially Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Woody Allen, Jerry Seinfield, Chris Rock and Lenny Bruce. um, that's about it.

oh and i'm applying to wesleyan u, swarthmore, amherst, tufts u, notre dame, yale, williams, the college of nj, rutgers, connecticut college, and american.

sgtpepper08, thanks for responding!
the soup (the host is SO cute!) and best week ever are hilarious. I try to catch them every week. I'm a big history trivia fan too, but my school doesn't have a quiz bowl team, just academic decathlon (which unfortunately I can't be a part of because I am too busy being the president of book club). I've never really gotten into scrubs. I know its like medical comedy. Is it like a spoof off ER and Grey's Anatomy? I want to study constitutional law in law school because it seemed pretty interesting in AP US History. I'm not really into politics right now because the political climate in the US right now is depressing to me. IMO, Neither Democrats nor Republicans seem to care about issues in health care or the war in Iraq.
Are you a rising senior (I think you are bc of your user name)? I am. I start school on Monday :( And cool we're both applying to Yale and American. What's your top choice? Mine? University of Chicago, because I love the intense academia at the school and Core curriculum. But I'll be happy anywhere else on my list.

yes, i'm a rising senior but I don't start school until September 12. I don't really have a top choice but my favorites are Wesleyan and Swarthmore. I thought about UChicago but I don't know how I would feel about living in a city even though when I visited Chicago in July I loved it. But I definately liked that school so I haven't completely ruled it out. i also haven't ruled out george washington but it's really really expensive. i also left williams college off my list and i'm definately applying there. oh and about scrubs, i've never seen grey's anatomy and rarely watch ER but I can tell you it's not a spoof. It's really funny though.

Is Washington that expensive? Like more expensive than the rest of the colleges on your list? I love city life, that's why most of my schools are in or near a city. Probably because I live in a small town. I have to read an entire book (secret life of bees) and do note cards and explain six quotes before tomorrow..yeah I admit I waited until the last minute to do summer assignments (well one of them) and will holed up in my room because of this...

hey koolmaria139 I'm Nigerian as well =D, anyway my list looks like this: Emory, Duke, Wash U in St. Louis, Boston, Case Western, UVA, and UF.
Good luck!!
I've been stressing over college since like sophomore year and I can't believe how quickly high school has gone by.

no, track babi. sorry I am not applying to Cornell because it is not close to a large city and is way too big.
cool floridastudent you're Nigerian too! I hardly know any Nigerians (outside of my family of course) because I live in a small town in Southern GA. What do you like to do? What tribe are you (or your parents from)? I'm Oron. (there are only like 1 million of us) Can you make soup? My aunt claims that every true Nigerian girl (except me) knows how to cook soup by the age of fourteen. According to her, if I don't learn how to cook soup, I will never get a husband, lol. I can make garri, beans, and rice (not stew) though. Do you sip garri with beans? That's like my favorite Nigerian meal, lol.

Is anyone retaking the SAT come Oct. or Nov. I am so nervous about it. Because I took twice already and my score was mediocre (1950/2400) What classes are y'all tking next year?

I'm taking the October SAT. I'm kind of nervous about, I don't even remember what my score was though. classes I'm taking are AP lit, AP Psych, um 3 religion classes, AP Euro, pre-calc, and physics. I'm not really excited though cause my schedule got all screwed up. I was supposed to take french and latin but I couldn't because my school is so tiny and they have single classes for euro and physics.
p.s. I have a lot of Nigerian friends. By a lot I mean more than 10. I think maybe one of them can cook soup lol.

Yes sevitagen you are right lol!! Well im black mixed w/ asian & I will be applying to: harvard, princeton, stanford, northwestern, Uchicago, duke, and claremont mckenna, and the rice/baylor program, and thats about it!!

Yeah diva and sevitagen at some liberal arts colleges Asians are considered URM's.
Diva, cool you're applying to Chicago. All my friends and my sister tell me that I am insane for wanting to go there because there are (practically) like no black people, no one does anything but study, and the work is really intense. But I visited there this summer and loved the atmosphere, and I adore the Core curriculum.

sgtpepper you're taking three religion classes. Do you go to a Christian school? My senior ('08!!! so excited) schedule is
AP Lit
AP Gov
Humanities (required)
AP Euro
Drama (fine arts required)
Hon. Calculus
Hon. Physics
Hon. Economics

koolmaria, im Igbo and my Family is from Anambra State. No, I do not know how to make soup and most Nigerians I know don't either, so you won't have to worry about that. You'll find a husband lol. Aren't there a lot of Nigerians in Atlanta

koolmaria my mother says the exact same thing about cooking yam and stew, but I still don't know how to cook! =) (guess i won't find a husband either lol)
they are of Igbo people and where I live there is actually quite a large Nigerian community.
next year im taking:
AP Chem
AP Psych
AP Gov/Econ
AP Calc AB
AP Physics B
AP Literature
