URM?

I know URM means underrepresented minority, but I’m getting confused on what would define a person as one. I was born in Thailand and immigrated to the U.S. around 4 yrs old. My mom is also Thai.

My number one college, which I want to apply has an Asian percentage of around 1%. Would this help me for admission? Thanks

Google their Common Data Set and look at section C7 to see how/if race is considered.

In general, any Asian is considered an ORM, over represented minority. African American and Latina/o are what is typically meant by URM. However, if your #1 college is looking for diversity, with 1% Asians, I would think this is in your favor. What’s the college? Is it possible however, they have a bias against Asians and Asian Americans?

@preppedparent The college is Miami University in Oxford, Ohio

Miami (OH) doesn’t use race.

“As part of our recruitment efforts, we partner closely with the Office of Admission to facilitate a diverse undergraduate student population.”

Dig into this. They have a lot to say about diversity.

I checked out your stats in another thread and Miami Ohio is a match for you. I don’t think you will need to be concerned about minority status. You’ll probably get in based on stats alone.

It probably means it is really hard to get into if you are Asian, that they have a 1% quota. I hope this sort of thing is OK to discuss.

@lookingforward where did you read this if you dont mind telling me? Thanks

I think it probably means that Asian students aren’t applying in high numbers. The school has a 65% acceptance rate.
