I am a hispanic male planning on applying to CAS ED. How much easier is it for a URM to be accepted? If any currently enrolled URMs at Cornell could post their stats that would be phenomenal.

yea i want to know this question too

It's a lot easier. If you can walk and talk that should be sufficient to gain admission.

All kidding aside, it helps your chances a lot given that you are a good student.

how about this 3.7 UW 4.2 W, URM (black), No rank, good ec's, 1900 SAT

thanks goodcolleges, that helps

no that was a question lol not a statement

goodcolleges, u have a good shot, but what's your sat out of 1600?

as of right now its only a 1200 (620 V 580 M...i hope i can take the raise it to a 1300...im takin the ACT in sept and the SAT again in OCt

im going to be a freshman next yr and am a hispanic male also. my stats were:

4.2 W, 2130 SAT (760 M, 700 W, 670 V), pretty good ec's, school didnt rank let me know wat else wud help you get an idea

cool...what was your unweighted GPA

I'ma URM who got into Cornell twice, once as a freshman and now I'm coming as an ILR transfer student in the fall. You can PM me if you have any questions or want to know my stats.

Head of Church Communications Dept., and there was probably more that i cant remember right now...lol

I sent in a CD of my piano playing (i've been playing for 13 years)

I applied ED....was deferred and then accepted RD =D !!!

Basically, you have to really make yourself stand out...especially if you have low SAT scores or something that might hurt your application (like my SAT II scores...lol) I wrote what many thought was an awesome essay and had great recommendations so that could have all played a part..[applying ED helps too ;) ]

but you never know.....

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Don't think you can get in just because you're a minority. Your stats have to be good enough for Cornell. There are no free rides here.

I'm not going to list my EC's but they were good. I also won a research paper contest held by Cornell's medical school as a sophomore. I placed in a national essay contest. What else... I went to Thailand with the Experiment in International Living on a grant I received the summer after Junior year. I had other accomplishments but I'm lazy right now. The only reason I'm doing this is to help a few URM's out. I don't like listing all this crap for everyone to see.

Does being Jewish count? lol...no seriously, do u think it did?

Thanks, bongoboy, I think you make a really good point. I think Im pretty much as URM as you can get: black (African), female, and gay if that counts...
But I would never kid myself into thinking I will get more slack than I deserve. If anything being an URM only helps you to stand out and say "Ok, look ,so I may not have had as many opportunities as my peers have, but look at what I have done with everything I have been given. It's about making the most of your situation. Let your URM status be a platform to help you stand out, not a crutch to lean on.

Oh yeah, and I mentioned Thailand cuz Im going there to do research this summer.

Ive yet to apply to college, but Im hoping just as much as all of you guys that my URM status helps me stand out. Good luck to everyone.
