I got into both colleges for computer science, and I’m not sure which to go to. URoch is ranked much higher than Stony Brook generally, however, Stony Brook is known to have a great computer science program, unlike URoch. Tuition is not that important to me. Any advice?
For undergraduate study, UR’s computer science program would be at least as strong as SBU’s.
Both are solid for CS, I’d focus on fit here. Did you get to visit either? Any gut feelings either way?
Another consideration: how sure are you about CS? Rochester will likely offer better programs should you switch majors.
I haven’t had a chance to visit either, and I don’t see myself changing majors. One of my concerns is networking and opportunities. Is UR lacking in comparison to SBU? I’ve heard that SBU is pretty well respected in tech.
I think you are under-regarding UR’s programs in technology. Even its city has been long known for technology. Consider UR’s comparatively stronger student profile as well.
What is the net cost of each school?
How does Lehigh compare vs UR and Stony?
If both schools cost about the same, UR is ranked #29 nationally and would be a much better choice. It has smaller classes and great professors.
URochester is much better. It has solid respect in international academic circles and attracts a higher quality student body. Academically average applicants can still get into Stony Brook, but Rochester is considerably more picky, attracting many more students from the top of their high school classes. URoch has a real campus, quite pretty, on a river. Stony Brook is a group of cellblock style towers in a boring suburb. The city of Rochester itself is also an up-and-coming tech hub and it’s affordable. The area around Stony Brook offers a few positives in terms of quality of life, and yet housing is untouchably expensive for young people. I would also be concerned about the high percentage of Long Islanders at Stony Brook. U Rochester is so much more diverse in terms of geographic composition of the student body. URoch will likely cost a lot more, but worth it IMO, especially since tuition is not a factor for you.
