UROP for non-MIT-ers

Hey, so, I didn't make it into MIT for the class of 2010, and while it was saddening, I realized that there are schools besides MIT that have undergraduate research, awesome faculty, and exciting motivated people. However, when it comes to undergraduate research, I'd still have to say that MIT takes the cake in both funding, researchers, environment, one-of-the-technological-capitals-of-the-world, etc. But since I didn't make it, I was wondering, are there any people who do undergraduate research at MIT (over the summer) who are NOT students at MIT? Thanks!

I found this by googling. This is the Space Nanotechnology Laboratory at MIT" I'm sure there is more information somewhere.

"Student Summer Jobs
The SNL has occasionally hired exceptional undergraduate students from outside of MIT for summer jobs. However, we generally give MIT UROP students preference in hiring." http://snl.mit.edu/positions.html

Here's something about biotech:
"The Biotechnology Process Engineering Center, a National Science
Foundation funded Engineering Research Center at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, is presently seeking outstanding undergraduates
to participate in the Research Experience for Undergraduates Program
during the summer term of 2005. The REU Program provides non-MIT
students with the opportunity to participate in the research programs at
the Biotechnology Process Engineering Center. Participants must be
either Permanent Residents or US citizens. Applicants should currently
be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program with a major in
biology, chemistry, or engineering, and have at least some experience
with Biology." http://www.csun.edu/~ac53971/courses/math592D/biotech_mit.html

Try googling REU MIT or NON-MIT SUMMER RESEARCH or something along those lines and whatever you're interested in.

There's also a summer research program through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and a program through the biology department. (I only know about biology. One-track mind.)

Additionally, you could contact professors whose work interests you by email, rather than applying to a particular program.
