So the UROP application for incoming freshmen opens tomorrow and I'm wondering if anyone could share their experiences with it. I would only do 6 hours a week if I did it, but is that still like a "big" time commitment or is it worth it for the credits and experience? Haha just share your thoughts about the program if you've done it.

I did it for pay + 1 credit. I did 6-9 hours a week which was kind of a big time commitment on top of my 17 credits of class, but my supervisor and sponsor were great, and I loved where I worked. The seminars were pretty pointless though, and I often had to either schedule alternate exams or attend seminars the night before big tests.

Overall it was good though, it helps freshman get a good experience and meet people. As a sophomore though, I was invited to come back and work next year by my supervisor, so if I do research I’ll do it without UROP.

Were we supposed to get an email or something in the mail inviting us to apply? Or can anyone apply? It seems like I remember reading somewhere about that application date, but now I can’t find it in my giant stack of papers.

Yeah I figure if I do it, it will be 6 hours a week for two credits and then I would take like a 15 credit schedule. I also want to do greek life and am in honors, is that doable?

I think it sounds doable, I have a few engineering friends with really tough schedules, and a frat. I’m not sure what extra requirements honors have tho.

volleyballplayer, I’m not sure about an invitation but you should go to the website and apply. Pretty much everyone gets in.

for some reason i can’t open the freshman urop application. is anyone else having this problem?

Yeah, it’s this outlook thing…i’ve tried making an account from Outlook bt it still doesn’t work.

Anyone have any luck in registering yet?

Nope I sent them an email though.

Does everybody who applies get in?

It definitely isn’t hard to get into the UROP program–as long as you show legitimate interest in the program you should have a good chance.

I did it this past year for work-study, and having done that I’d have to say that it was a fairly good experience, but most of what I got out of the program was from the work that went on specifically for my project, and not at all related to the actual UROP program (which consists of the biweekly seminars and assignments, monthly meetings with your advisor, etc.). If you do work-study, then the majority of your grade comes from these mandatory assignments/attendance at seminars/attendance at meetings, and your sponsor’s assessment only determines whether or not your grade gets a + or - appended to it. If you take UROP for class credit, the opposite is true.

If you want to get paid, UROP is a good program to start in because they will provide the funding for you to work ($8.50/hour this past year, which is on the lower end of campus jobs, but it’s something), and there are plenty of research projects to choose from. On the other hand, I’d definitely consider approaching professors/researchers in your area(s) of interest to see if you could find an opportunity that way, since you’ll likely have more flexibility and control over what you want to work on (and there are always professors looking for help with projects). It might be harder to get a funded spot (any payment would be coming from lab funds, but you can definitely still find work this way), but you can also always get credit for doing directed study/research outside of UROP.

Just applied! anyone have any idea on when we’ll hear back? or at least a confirmation email?

I’m not sure when we’ll hear back, but the confirmation e-mail came right after I submitted the app.

I didn’t get a confirmation email…weird.

Maybe it had to do something with the e-mail address? I entered an alternate email address kind of without really thinking so now the email correspondence with UROP isn’t going to my umich.edu account. But idk if that would matter or not

Hah that’s a good observation. I used a different email address as well. But i logged back into the application and it said that I have completed it, so I think it was submitted properly.

Did you guys check your spam? Because that’s where I got my confirmation email…

Good call. Mine was in spam. Gmail always does this… lol

I did UROP freshman year and knew several others who were involved in it as well. As has been mentioned, almost everyone who applies gets in.
Most of the time you will not be doing any substantial work, unless you get lucky and find an advisor who gives you real work to do. I only entered data the entire year and that was supplemented with weekly meetings with the lab to go over papers.
At one UROP weekly seminar, all of us had to speak briefly about what we were doing in our respective projects, and the majority of people didn’t seem to be gaining too much from it. However, I’ll admit that it gives you a taste for research and will help you better understand whether you can benefit from it.

How did you guys apply already? Doesn’t it ask for your tentative class schedule? I thought that would be after orientation?
